On Friday, November 11, 2022, Charles "Mac" McFarland Hunter, loving husband, and father of two children, passed away at the age of 80 in Wilmington, NC. He was born on April 9, 1942, in Salisbury, NC to Robert and Miriam (Stevenson) Hunter. On August 27, 1966, he married Mary Frances Allen. They raised a daughter, Leigh, and a son, Allen.
Mac received his law degree from Wake Forest University in 1967, after serving as a member of the Army Reserves. He retired from his C. Mac Hunter, P.A. law firm in 2017 after practicing for fifty years. During his career, he not only helped others find justice, but he also strove to ensure accessibility and affordability of legal services to those who would otherwise receive inadequate representation. Mac served over thirty years as the attorney for the town of Erwin, NC. In addition, he served as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Dunn, NC, and on numerous boards including Good Hope Hospital, Central Carolina Bank, BB&T and First Federal Bank.
In 2017, Mac was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest awards conferred by the Governor of North Carolina to persons "for exemplary service to the State of North Carolina and their communities that is above and beyond the call of duty and which has made a significant impact and strengthened North Carolina." He was also recognized as the Town of Erwin Citizen of the Month and received a letter of great appreciation from the Office of Indigent Defense Services of the State of North Carolina for his years of dedicated service to those who sought counsel in their greatest time of need.
Mac was devoted to his family and friends and loved them all dearly. He lived every day to the fullest; among his many interests were golf, flying airplanes, boating, snow skiing, dancing the "beach step," telling a good joke and playing the harmonica.
Mac was preceded in death by his father, Robert; his mother, Miriam; his brother, Robert, of Salisbury, NC; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Dunn, of Fayetteville, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Leigh (Scott) Morris, of Watkinsville, GA; son, Allen (Christin) Hunter, of Durham, NC; and his three grandchildren, Mary Katherine Morris and Emily Cullen Morris of Watkinsville, GA, and Riley JamesHunter of Durham, NC. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty (Don) Williamson, of Atlantic Beach,
NC; his brother-in-law, Joseph Fairley Dunn, of Fayetteville, NC; numerous nieces and a nephew.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Wrightsville United Methodist Church in Wrightsville Beach, NC, at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will directly follow at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation in Wilmington, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, the American Parkinson Disease Foundation or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (Hospice Center).

Mac was in law school with me and a member of the same Law Fraternity. He was a great guy and shared fond memories of the humor to be found in the law school ordeal. Though our work did not overlap, it is no surprise that he became a community leader and gave back to the world around him. Dean Weathers would be proud.
