Charles Lee "Charlie" Jones, 52, of Cheyenne, was born on April 7, 1972, in Springfield, Missouri, had passed away in Cheyenne Wyoming on September 2, 2024.
Charlie grew up in Nixa, Missouri, where he attended high school and played as a running back on the football team. He was selected to attend college at the United States Air Force Academy and graduated in 1995. After graduation, he served in the missile field and was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 2002 he left his military service to serve in law enforcement as an agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His career and life choices took him places all over the world, but he always wanted to come back to Wyoming. He finally got that chance in 2017 when he became the Supervising Senior Agent for all the Wyoming Field Offices. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in November 2022. Charlie would not sit still for long and made a full circle back to the Air Force working as a civilian contractor.
Charlie loved being outdoors, whether it was in the mountains at the family cabin feeding peanuts to the chipmunks or in the elk woods hunting. Charlie was a huge sports fan. While stationed in Germany he learned how to play rugby. He loved rugby so much that he became a referee and was refereeing at the collegiate level. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy Jones; two sons, Jake Jones and Josh Jones; Father and Stepmother, Al and Beth Jones, two grandsons, Jameson and Klay Jones, Sister, Melissa Starnes and countless friends who he considered part of his family.
Charlie was preceded in death by his mother, Cyndi Ayers.

Learning of Charlie's passing is tremendously saddening, and I hope that his family can rest easy knowing that Charlie was also a great friend. He had that unique mix of "Show Me State" wit and countryboy courage that made his friendship fun and unquestioned. With Charlie, you were going to make it out of whatever situation you got into and would laugh about it later. Undoubtedly, these qualities made him a great husband, father, grandfather, and law enforcement officer.

Charlie & I survived our freshman year at the Air Force Academy and were fast friends for the three years that followed. Whether it was playing pickup basketball on some of the seedier beachside courts in Southern California to snow skiing Vail in t-shirts and jean shorts to water skiing Lake of the Ozarks in the buff, Charlie always went all out with a wisecrack and a smile. I hazily remember us challenging the entire Denver Broncos fan population at Mile High Stadium to a boxing match during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs...and then there was the time Charlie delivered pizza to the Wing Staff during noon meal formation dressed as the Tiger Ten mascot. Charlie's courge and humor were legendary during our time at the Academy and made memories that will continue on.

Absolutely shocked to hear this news. Tammy Jake and Josh you will never know how much I looked up to Charlie. He was and still is a hero to me. You guys helped us in an important transitional period. The decisions you helped us with shaped the lives of our children. We owe you so much. If we can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to ask.

We are sadden to hear the news of Charlie“s passing. Eric and I will never forget the friendship we shared when your family lived in Wichita Falls, TX and Bixby, OK. It was Charlie that told us, Oklahoma was a great place to live. We engaged and watched our kids wrestle and play football to only lose touch years later. One memory we will never forget was during the snowstorm he lost his cell phone in the 10ft of snow trying to help us. He was panicked! Many great memories with you all. Tammy, Jake and Josh, you are in our thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace. Much sympathy, Jennifer & Eric Walker

My sincere condolences to Charlie“s family. I was shocked to hear of his passing and heartbroken for his entire family. I was the AOC of Cadet Squadron Three at the USAF Academy from 1994-1996, so Charlie was a "firstie" or senior my first year as AOC. Charlie was a man of solid character and had such a great and cheerful personality. I know he will be so missed by his family and a multitude of friends. Fly high Charlie!
