     Charles James King (Jim), 91, St. Johnsbury, VT died at his home on Sunday, June 9. He

was born November 6, 1932 to Philip and Barbara (Raymore) King in Morrisville, VT and was

always proud of being the first baby born at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. He graduated from

St. Johnsbury Academy in 1950 and was very proud to have named the Hilltoppers in his time

as sports editor of the school paper. After his first year of college, he joined the Army and

served in Korea from 1953 to 1955. After his discharge, he earned a BA in Physical Education

from Springfield College and an MA in Education from the University of Buffalo where he met

his first wife, Elaine. They had one daughter, Karen (King) Haskins.

   Jim was a lifelong educator, working as a teacher and principal in Connecticut and New York.

After Elaine’s death in 1985, Jim met and married Maxine (Stewart) King and returned to

Vermont to become the principal of the St. Johnsbury Middle School. After a career in St.

Johnsbury, Jim worked as principal at several other Vermont schools. He was beloved by

generations of students and teachers and was named Principal of the Year in 1995 by the

Vermont Principals’ Association.

   Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an avid fan of

the New York Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals and coached numerous sports throughout

his career. He was a proud Rotarian and a lifelong lover of Big Band music. Jim loved reading

about history and doing crossword puzzles and is remembered as a fierce competitor on the

racquetball court.

   Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years Maxine (Stewart) King; his daughter, Karen (King)

Haskins and her husband Merle; his stepdaughter Ginger (Gage) Cossey; daughter-in-law

Jenny Gage; his sister Judith (King) Slayton and her husband Richard; his grandchildren

Emma Haskins and her husband Matthew Goodhind, Sophie Haskins, Eli Haskins, Alice

Haskins, Caleb Kittredge, Kaytlyn Morey, Riley Gage, and Madison Gage; and his great-

grandson Rowan Goodhind.

   Jim was predeceased by his first wife Elaine (Kooman) King, son-in-law Patrick Cossey, and

stepson Stewart Gage.
