Dr. Charles D. Lein, 84, of
Lafayette, LA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family in his home on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Chuck was born on November 2, 1941, in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Chuck met the love of his life, Sue, in high school during the State A Basketball Tournament in Rapid City. They married on June 30, 1962, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades. He graduated from Augustana University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree, then continued his studies at the University of Wyoming, earning a Master of Science degree in 1964 and a Doctor of Education degree in 1970.
Chuck built an impressive career as an educator and higher education administrator. Shortly after completing his studies, he served as Dean of the College of Business at Boise State University. In 1977, he became the youngest president in the history of the University of South Dakota, a testament to his vision, leadership, and dedication.
In 1982, Chuck pivoted his talents to the corporate jewelry world, becoming president and CEO of Landstrom's Black Hills Gold in Rapid City, where he led the company for 11 years. In 1993, he and Sue moved to
Lafayette, Louisiana, where Chuck joined Stuller, Inc. He served as president and COO until his retirement in 2009. Chuck also contributed his expertise as a board member for Albertson's Inc. for 28 years.
A true outdoorsman throughout his life, Chuck traveled to all corners of the earth to fish and hunt big game. His Western roots ran deep, he loved country music, rodeos, and all things South Dakota, especially the Belle Fourche rodeos. He was also an avid runner, sharing countless marathons with Sue and their sons.
In his later years, Chuck found joy in golfing, with Sue always by his side in the cart. Together, they also cherished their many cruises, exploring the world by sea several times each year. Chuck embraced Louisiana and his life with Sue wholeheartedly, becoming a proud admirer of Cajun culture. One of the highlights of his life in Lafayette was when he and Sue were crowned King and Queen of the Krewe Victoria.
Above all, Chuck was devoted to his family and friends. He was admired for his integrity and generous spirit. Family meant everything to Chuck, and he leaves a legacy of love that will endure through generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Susan Ellen Buckingham Lein; his four sons, Kent, Keith and his wife, Lynn, Steve and his wife, Paula and Greg and his wife, Nicole; dearly loved by his nine grandchildren, Ryan, Chase, Alexis, Ethan, Nathan, Isabelle, Katie, Cooper and Zoe; two great-granddaughters; his siblings, Howard and Julie and nieces, nephews and friends.
