Charles Edical Mires, age 84, of Roscommon, died on Friday, January 31, 2025, in Foley, Alabama, in the presence of his family.
Chuck was born on June 18, 1940, in Port Huron, Michigan, the oldest son of Nelson and Clara (Sakwin) Mires.
After graduating from high school, Chuck attended Alma College where he was a proud member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was also a member of the football team (known as No Miss Mires) and the baseball team. Chuck met his future bride Linda Smock at The Music Box in Prudenville, Michigan. They married on September 15, 1962, in Grayling, Michigan at St. Francis Episcopal Church.
Their life together started in Flint, Michigan, where Chuck worked for General Motors. Soon after, they decided city life was not for them and moved to Roscommon, where they started Paddle Brave Canoe Livery and Campgrounds. During this time, he taught in Grayling for 20 years and coached football there as well as in Roscommon. While owning the canoe livery, Chuck started Travel Information Services, a brochure distribution company.
Their Higgins Lake cottage is a cherished gathering place for family and friends where Chuck enjoyed boating, water skiing, swimming, jet skiing and campfires. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports throughout high school and college. Chuck was an active member of The Rotary Club of Roscommon. As a Rotarian since 1988, he served as president and started The Great AuSable Duck Race. He was also honored with 25 years of Perfect Attendance and earned the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Chuck will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda of 62 years; daughters, Sandi (Dan) Beckwith of Beal City, Michigan, and Tammy Mires of Fruitport, Michigan; son, Scott (Sue) Mires of Roscommon; grandchildren: Sydney (Jeff) Sonnenberg of Allendale, Michigan, Stone (Jordyn) Beckwith of Rockford, Michigan, Hunter (Jenifer) Mires of Roscommon, and Macy Mires of Roscommon; great grandchildren: Quinn, Kennedy, Brady, Myles, Colt, and Mason; brother, Doug (Nancy) Mires of Rochester Hills, Michigan; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marti; and daughter, Kimberly Mires.
Family and friends will gather for a visitation from 11:00-1:00 PM, with the Funeral at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, 143 Lake Street, Roscommon, Michigan 48653.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Roscommon County Community Foundation-Kimberly Mires Athletic & Music Scholarship or to The Rotary Club of Roscommon in Chuck Mires' memory.
