Theron "Butch" Mires passed from this life at his home in Elizabethtown, Indiana, on March 25, 2025, at the age of 82. Butch was born on August 9, 1942, in Columbus, Indiana, to the late Curtis Eugene and June L. Butler Mires.
Butch's early years were spent in the halls of Columbus High School, from which he graduated in 1960. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Indiana Business College, where he earned an associate degree that would serve him well in his future endeavors. On July 28, 1963, Butch married his first love, Lois A. Waltz, who shared his life until her passing on May 31, 2016. Butch found love once more when he married Pat A. Brill Northrop on April 21, 2018, and she remains to honor his memory.
Professionally, Butch dedicated 35 years to Cummins Engine Company, retiring in 1998. His work ethic was unparalleled, a trait that also shone brightly in his life as a farmer. Butch was a member of East Columbus United Methodist Church, and he attended the Columbus Free Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Cummins Diesel Workers Union.
Farming was not just a job but his favorite hobby. Other interests included fishing, hunting, woodworking, bowling, and watching IU basketball and other sports. He also enjoyed playing games and doing puzzles. Most of all though, he loved his family, family gatherings, and his monthly breakfast and lunch meetings with friends.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; children, Melinda (David) Foust of Seymour and Theron L. (Jill) Mires of Madison; stepdaughter, Julie Schoolcraft of Brown County; grandchildren, Emily (Cody) Surenkamp, Jonathan (Courtney) Foust, Zoe (Evan) Hackney and Mia Mires; great-grandchildren, Connor and Chloe Surenkamp and Hallie Hackney; step-grandsons, Brandon and Josh Zamarripa; sisters, Kay Brown of Columbus, Janet (Larry) Coon of Seymour and Charlene Burbrink of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lois; and brothers-in-law, Clarence Brown and Larry Burbrink.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Pastor Luke Maggard will officiate. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday.
Butch will be laid to rest at the Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus Free Methodist Church.
