Charles F. Moore, 89, of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, Asheville, NC, died October 28, 2025, from the side effects of prostate cancer. Charles was born and raised in Silvertown, Georgia, now part of Thomaston.
He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Janet McDaniel Moore, also born and raised in Thomaston, GA. They married one week after Charles' college graduation. He also leaves two sons and their families, Reuben Moore and fiancé Barbara Pherribo of Cary, NC and Dr. Fredric Moore and wife Melissa of Columbus GA; grandchildren Crystal Hakansson, Carl Moore, Charles "Chuck" Moore, Cristen Byerly, Leah Hite, Sara McCleary; and nine great-grandchildren.
Upon graduation from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, he was commissioned in the Army and served on active duty for 26 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. While in service he served in Korea twice, Vietnam twice, and Germany. He held many different positions while in service, including infantry platoon leader. During his first Vietnam tour, he helped establish the Vietnamese Ranger School. On his second Vietnam tour, he was the Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese Signal School. He was a company commander in the 82nd Airborne Division, and a staff officer in the Pentagon after completing his Masters Degree at the University of Rochester. During his second Korean tour, he was chief of an Army Research Unit. He received the Army Commendation Medal twice, the Meritorious Service Medal four times, and the Bronze Star Medal. Both sons are veterans and Charles had the honor of pinning their Second Lieutenant bars on when they were commissioned.
Following his retirement from service, he worked as a computer systems programmer for Oglethorpe Power Corporation in Atlanta until retiring in 1995. From 1991 to 1998, he and his wife owned and operated the Cullowhee Bed & Breakfast. After the third retirement he and his wife designed and built a home in Sylva, NC. They moved to Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in 2010.
He and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing early on, then became square and round dancers. They were members of the Pisgah Promenaders Square Dance Club. He enjoyed the music concerts at Western Carolina University. He also learned to play the lap dulcimer and the acoustic bass late in life.
Memorial gifts may be made in his memory to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (PO Box 96764 Washington DC 20090-6764) and The Corps of Cadets at the University of North Georgia,(UNG Foundation, PO Box 1330, Dahlonega GA 30597). A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
