Charles E. Newby, a resident of Chesterfield Township, Michigan, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 86.
He was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan on May 23, 1938, to the late Menzel Earl Newby, Sr. and Marion LaForge Newby.
On July 10, 1958, in Harrison Township, Michigan, he was united in marriage to to Patricia (Girvin). Together they shared 66 years of marriage.
After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, Charles returned home to civilian life and was employed as a mechanic by Russ Milne Ford and Sterling Hts Dodge before joining General Motors Corp for 22 years, retiring in 2001. His passion was the car racing world. He was a member of ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) and MCRT (Mt.Clemens Race Track) Association. He was an owner of race cars and builder of racing engines for decades. He got into racing when his Army service was over in his early 20's, when he built and drove his first car. He owned race cars with several different drivers until the early 90's. He never stopped building motors, continuing into his 80's. In his youth he was a caddy for local golfers and enjoyed playing hockey. Later he and wife Patricia traveled to Germany, Alaska, Hawaii and regular trips to Branson, Missouri where they enjoyed their love of music together. They also spent many happy times white water rafting, bowling and camping in their fifth wheel trailer.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Patricia, children, Robert Newby, Janice (Michael) Palazzolo, and Donna (Dennis) Dunlap. He was the proud grandfather of Jennifer (Jason) Barke, Joseph Dunlap, Sharon Dunlap, Kevin (Jessica) Rysiewski and Timothy Dunlap. He also leaves ten great grandchildren and siblings Sandra (the late Robert) Pesendorfer, Emma (Robert) Tabor, Mary Ann Schoen, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by infant twin brothers John and Joseph, brother, Menzel Jr. "Jim", sister Anna and granddaughter Monique.
Visitation will be held in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main, Mount Clemens, Michigan on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Private burial will take place at Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Township.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be addressed to Crohns and Colitis Foundation.
