Charles Ray Prater, affectionately known as "Good Time Charlie," passed away peacefully on June 11, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on April 27, 1941, in Weinert, Texas, to William Franklin Prater and Coila Lawrence, Charlie grew up in Midland/Odessa, Texas, and graduated from Mattson High School in 1959.
After high school, Charlie served his country honorably in the Navy for four years. Following his military service, he dedicated 25 years of his life as a firefighter in Dallas. In 1977, he embarked on a new adventure by opening Charlie's Outboard, a business that remains a cherished family operation, now run by his son and grandson.
Charlie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Midlothian, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He had a passion for fishing, enjoyed many lively lotto games, and treasured time spent with his beloved family. Known for his warm hospitality, Charlie never missed an opportunity to share a cold one and a good laugh with friends, earning him the nickname "Good Time Charlie."
On February 26, 1966, Charlie married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Oates, after meeting on a blind date and quickly falling in love. Their union was blessed with two children and many joyous memories. The family moved to Midlothian in 1975, where they established a loving home that stands to this day.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Ann Prater; daughter Debbie Baker; son Keith and daughter-in-law Melissa; grandchildren Scottie and Kendra Daniels, Justin and Jaylee Prater, Emily and Mason Neal; and great-grandchildren Rhyder and Conner Daniels, Jack and James Prater, with the eagerly awaited arrival of Baby Dawson Neal in September 2024. He also leaves behind his special cousin, Jeanene, and her husband, Billy Redder.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Franklin Prater and Coila Lawrence; siblings Leo and wife Wilma Prater, Bobby and wife Linda Prater, Pete and Linda Prater, and Jerry and Ann Prater.
Charlie's legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. His memory will live on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Charlie's name to a charity of your choice, continuing his spirit of giving and community support.
A memorial service will be held at Midlothian Funeral Home, where friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable man who will be dearly missed. Cemetery service will be held privately at Palmer Cemetery.
