Hagerstown, MD – Charles Edward "Charlie" Shindle, Sr., 88, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Doey's House after a short but determined fight against lung cancer.
He was born on February 15, 1936, in Maugansville, MD to the late Charles Preston and Cora Mae (Besecker) Shindle.
Charlie was a 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Mineral Wells, TX, part of the 101st Airborne fledging helicopter division. He trained as a military policeman and served as such until his honorable discharge.
He spent most of his life employed as a master electrician working on large construction jobs such as the Mt. Storm power plant and East Alco Aluminum factory. He was a proud union member of the I.B.E.W. Local #307 in Cumberland, MD until his retirement. His vocation drew him to serve on the Washington County Electrical Board as well as the Maryland State Electrical Board. As a labor representative, he joined others on the locating committee and coalition to construct the new hospital at its present location.
Charlie faithfully attended Valley Grace Brethren Church in Halfway, MD before health problems and COVID made it too difficult. He continued with bible study and connecting with numerous lifelong friends from Valley Grace.
Charlie's involvement in the community is almost legendary. Joining when he was 16, he was a lifetime member of Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Company. He was the past Fire Chief, Treasurer, President, and held many other positions within the company, including Chief delegate to the County and State Fire & Rescue Associations. His logical decision making helped guide Maugansville to where it is today.
Charlie was also a member of Community Rescue Service and has served on the Board of Directors for many years. He joined as a new EMT with ambulance 759 running numerous emergency calls and transports. His time on the building committee was instrumental in making the new Maugansville substation possible.
His time as a fire instructor for the University of Maryland was some of the most fulfilling of his life. He taught Fire Basic and Tactics to many individuals that became chief officers and professional firefighters.
Charlie loved the time he spent with the Washington County Industrial Foundation (CHIEF). So much effort was put forth to further the focus and goals of this organization.
Charlie leaves behind his beloved wife Phyllis Louise (McCarty) Shindle whom he married on June 26, 1982; daughter Vicki Lynn Whitfield of Greencastle, PA; son Charles Edward "Ed" Shindle, Jr. of Maugansville, MD; grandchildren Stephanie K. Black (Dustin), Jessica R. Hoffman (Brandon), and Charles E. "Chad" Shindle, III (Kim); 5 great grandchildren; numerous cousins; new furry buddy Scooter.
