Charles Edward Simmons, Sr., 81, was born in Springhill, Louisiana on September 18, 1941. He passed away on August 6, 2023, in West Monroe, Louisiana. Visitation will be Friday August 11, 2023, from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M., with memorial service following at Mulhearn Funeral Home, 300 McMillan Rd, West Monroe, LA. Inurnment to follow at Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Rayville, Louisiana.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Cincinnatus Powell “C.P.” Simmons; Mother, Leila Ruth Miers Simmons; and grandson, Charles Edward “Tripp” Simmons III.
He is survived by his only sister, Jan Williamson; three sons, Charles Edward Simmons, Jr., (Lynn), Chad Powell Simmons (Sabrina), and Thad Lee Simmons (Robin); Six grandsons, Wilson Powell Simmons, Tanner Calhoun Simmons (Lacee), Bradley Alexander Simmons (Logan), Edward Gray Allen, III (Molly), Chase Powell Simmons, and Garrett Turner Simmons; two granddaughters, Shelby Lynn Simmons and Elliot Claire Simmons; and five great grandchildren, Kelsie Lynn, Delilah, Benaiah Tripp, Clara, and Lilian Frances; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Charlie spent his youth in Delhi and was a member of Delhi Baptist Church, where he was baptized at the age of 14. At Delhi High School, he took great pride in being the quarterback on the 1957 Championship team. After high school, he attended Louisiana Tech University until he was drafted into the Army, where he served in Vietnam. Upon returning to the states, he began his pipeline career with Pipeliners Local Union 798. He held many positions in his 57 years with the union such as welder, welder foreman, and job steward. The hands always admired working for Good Time Charlie. Wherever he was, there was bound to be a good time. Charlie was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in New Orleans and the Barak Shrine Temple. He enjoyed the outdoors and told many tales about Davis Island and Lake D'arbonne.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Jude’s and Shriners Hospital for Children.
