Charles Spainhour Obituary


CHARLES T. "CHARLIE" SPAINHOUR passed away on August 17, 2025 in Aiken, SC after a brief illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 23, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in St. Albans, WV. Internment with Military Honors conducted by St Albans VFW Post 6418 and American Legion Post 73 will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St Albans. Visitation will be from 10 until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be directed to Habitat for Humanity or the Aiken SPCA in Aiken, SC.
A son of the late John M. Spainhour Sr. and Mildred M. Spainhour, he was born in Charleston, W.V. He was married for over 48 years to his beloved high school sweetheart Mary Marie McCormick Spainhour who passed away in 2006.
Charlie was a graduate of South Charleston WV High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from West Virginia State University and a Master of Science degree in Industrial Relations from West Virginia University.
He served in the United States Air Force and The West Virginia Air National Guard. Charlie was proud to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Charlie was employed by FMC Corporation in 1963 and held Human Resource and other Management positions in South Charleston, WV, Nitro, WV, Horsham, Pa., Anniston, AL, and Green Bay, WI. He transferred to the Aiken S.C. plant of FMC in 1981 as Human Resource Manager. In addition to Human Resources duties, he also was responsible for Industrial Hygiene, including Environmental compliance and Safety Management. He retired from FMC's successor company United Defense LP in 1995 and ran his own safety consulting business until 2000. He was committed to improving employee safety and health and became known as an outstanding safety advocate. His leadership resulted in the Aiken plant achieving the number one plant status nationally in their defense industry segment.
He was a communicant of Saint Mary Help of Christians Catholic church in Aiken. He was a past Grand Knight and a District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus Council 3684 in Aiken. He was past president of the American Heart Association Aiken chapter, charter member and past president of The Aiken Sunrise Rotary Club and served on the board of numerous charitable organizations in Aiken.
He is survived by a son, Charles. J. Spainhour (Rhonda) of Helena, AL and daughter Debra L. Pereira (Mark) of North Stonington, CT: four grandchildren, Jonathan Heller (Mary) of Colorado Springs, CO; Michael Heller (Selva) of Kimberly, AL; Bradley Spainhour (Anna) of Columbiana, AL; and Kristina Spainhour (Tony) of Macungie, PA; and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Hamilton, and Mollie Selbe, a brother John M. "Sonny" Spainhour Jr., and a son John Andrew "Andy" Spainhour.
