Charles Robert Sterrett, 89, of Frostburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025, at home surrounded by family.
Charles was born December 16, 1935, in Mifflintown, PA., to the late James Fay and Elizabeth (Zook) Sterrett. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1957 and was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force. He proudly served his country for 25 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, rising to the rank of Colonel. During his service, he received a Master’s Degree in Systems Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Management from American University. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1982, Charles joined the faculty at Frostburg State University as a professor in the School of Business Administration, and served as the chair of the Business Administration department for a number of years. He retired from teaching in 2000.
Charles was also a lifelong follower of Jesus. He was a member of the Frostburg Church of the Nazarene and served in various roles, including Sunday School teacher, board member and treasurer. He was an active member of the Gideons for over 45 years and dedicated his life to spreading the gospel.
Finally, Charles was a loving and dedicated family man. Surviving are his wife of nearly 60 years, Harriet M. (Knerr) Sterrett; his son, Matthew James Sterrett and wife Heather of Hanover, PA, and granddaughters Hannah Noelle, Holly Elizabeth, Meghan Olivia and Mollie Grace Sterrett; and son Jonathan David Sterrett and wife Ashley, of Keyser, WV, granddaughter Skylar Dougherty and grandson, Jaxon Charles Sterrett. He is also survived by his loving cousins, nephews, niece, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, and extended family.
Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at Frostburg Church of the Nazarene, 150 Center St, Frostburg, MD, on Friday, September 5th at 12 noon with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service from 11 am to noon.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 1:00 pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, PA.
