Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith Funeral & Cremation Care on Nov. 10, 2025.
Charles David Townsend, 66, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday November 8, 2025, in
Morgantown, WV.
He was born on December 14, 1959, in Martinsburg, WV, the youngest of four sons of Helen Virginia Gold Luttrell Townsend and Lyle Addison Townsend, Sr.
In addition to his parents, Chuck is preceded in death by his brother Stephen Townsend.
Those left to cherish Chuck's memory include his daughters, Arden Cyr and her husband Nick Cyr (
Morgantown, WV) and Grace Townsend and her husband Richard Nolan (New Orleans, LA); beloved granddaughter, Rachel Cyr; and brothers, Lyle Townsend, Jr., and his wife Gladys, and Andrew Townsend and his wife Michele. He also leaves behind many special nieces and nephews, and best friends Randy Evans and his wife Karen, and James Riley and his wife Niki.
Chuck was an Army veteran, serving his country stationed in Hawaii. He earned a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University and had a strong interest in laboratory sciences. He treasured his time working as a med tech and as a clinical research coordinator at Clinical Pharmacological and Research Center for over 30 years. He also served Workforce WV where he enjoyed assisting people in finding career opportunities. Chuck was an active member of Jakes Run Assembly of God for many years. He was outgoing, had a great sense of humor, and made life-long connections everywhere he went.
Chuck was a true West Virginian and an avid outdoorsman. He loved a good road trip with friends, hunting, training bird dogs, WVU Mountaineers, Martinsburg Bulldogs, story storytelling, and music (marching bands and classic French horn). He was a grill master and enjoyed sharing big batches of the best barbeque on game days. After he retired, Chuck worked part-time at Bass Pro Shop Outfitter where he enjoyed the friendship of wonderful coworkers and teaching young people about hunting and fishing.
Chuck was a great man who will be sincerely missed. He had a gift for making others feel seen and welcome, whether that was with a quick laugh, a listening ear, or a quiet act of help when it was needed most. The family would like to thank friends and family who helped him live life to the fullest in his last days. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the
Wounded Warrior Project or simply asks that you honor Chuck by lending a hand to a friend just as he would have done.
A celebration of life service will be held at Black Bear Burritos restaurant in
Morgantown, WV, in January 2026, the date/time is still to be determined.
The family would like to thank the Smith Funeral & Cremation Care of Westover for honoring Chuck's life and legacy.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:1-3
