Charles Edward VanHandel, age 81, of Dixon, was born October 6, 1941, at Little Shoot, WI, a son of Cornelius Donald and Laura Carolina (Haffman) VanHandel, and passed from this life Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at his residence near Dixon.
He entered active federal service in the United States Army in 1960 and served until 1963, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, at the rank of Private First Class (E-3). Charles was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean (Adkirson) VanHandel, who preceded her husband in death.
He was a member of Mid-Rivers Seventh-Day Adventist Church,
St. Peters, MO; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5517, Winfield, MO; American Legion in WI; Volunteers for Veterans; and the Masonic Lodge. During his working life, Charles was employed by Boeing Aircraft Corporation, St. Louis, as an Aircraft Mechanic, prior to his retirement. He enjoyed being outdoors to go hunting and fishing with his family.
Those left to celebrate the life of Charles include: His children, Brenda Powell of Foley, MO; Robin Sutherland of Winfield, MO; Laura Ratliff of Dixon, MO; Cynthia Griffin and husband, David, of Dixon, MO; Sandra Harrison and husband, Ken, of St. Robert; Tawnya VanHandel of
St. Peters, MO; and William VanHandel-Penfield of Doolittle, MO; his siblings, Mitzi Hacker of
Green Bay, WI; Ken VanHandel and wife, Pat, of
Cedarburg, WI; and Gary VanHandel and wife, Sam, of
Menasha, WI; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; nephews; nieces; other relatives; and many friends.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: One son, John Wayne Powell; two grandsons, Daniel Sutherland and Brandon DeBord; his father, Cornelius; his mother, Laura; two siblings, Gloria Managan and Cornelius VanHandel; and one brother-in-law, Walter Hacker.
Visitation for Mr. Charles VanHandel will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2023, in the Mid-Rivers Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 600 Salt Lick Road,
St. Peters, MO 63376, with his funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Rev. Dean Cordin officiating.
A private family inurnment ceremony for Mr. Charles VanHandel will be held in the Star Hope Cemetery located in Lincoln County near
Elsberry, MO. Honorary pallbearers for Charles are William Ratliff, Kyle DeBord, David Sullins, Adam Griffin, Joshua Dutkiewicz, Kenneth Harrison, David Salter, David Griffin, Daniel Sutherland, Brandon DeBord, and William VanHandel-Penfield.
