Cherolyne Louise (Roberts) Hendon, age 97, of Morton, Texas, died Wednesday, January 25, 2023 in Levelland. She was born June 4, 1925 in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada to Tom and Myrtle (Wright) Roberts. She was married to H.W. "Tobe" Hendon.
Cherolyne moved to the United States at the young age of 10 years. She attended a year of school in both Tulsa and Fairview, Oklahoma. She was living in Chula Vista, Callifornia, when she received her documentation of citizenship. In the U.S., her school classes were larger than the entire Canadian country school, Grainview. There were eleven students until the Roberts family moved away. In the States, it was just a short walk to school, unlike Canada, when it took an hour on horseback or riding in a covered sleigh, called a cutter for four miles. Cherolyne's parents would wrap a brick warmed from the oven of their wood-burning stove to put in the cutter to keep their feet warm. The brick was then placed on the furnace at the school to be ready for the trip home. The family enjoyed ice skating, and everyone was dressed warmly for the occasional snowball encounter. Cherolyne, along with her parents and four brothers moved near Levelland, Texas in 1939, where her father managed the Cobleland Farms for his sister, Maud Coble. She graduated from Levelland High School in 1943 as Valedictorian of her class, before attending Texas Tech University. There, she received her BA degree and later her Teacher Certification Certificate. Cherolyne spent her entire teaching career in Morton, Texas. She was a membe of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, for which she served as President, Morton Classroom Teachers, Cochran-Hockley Association of Retired Teachers and Town and Country Study Club. She was also a member of 1936 Study Club, and was supervisor for the Cochran County Credit Union for 20 plus years, which she was presented a gold watch for her service. Cherolyne was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morton, where she taught the ladies Sunday School class, and also served as the president of the Mary Martha SS class for many years. She was exceedingly devoted to the care and needs of her mother, the last ten years of her life, as an invalid in the Roberts Memorial Nursing Home, the land for which was given in 1963 as a memorial to her husband, Tom Roberts. Cherolyne is preceded in death by her husband, Tobe Hendon; her parents; and her four brothers, Merlin Roberts, Vern Roberts, Daryl Roberts and Enon Roberts. She was the last survivor of 32 first cousins.
Cherolyne is survived by her son, Farley Inglis of Morton, Texas; her granddaughter, Stephanie Marie Babcock and her husband, Robert of Wasilla, Alaska; and her two great-grandsons, Erik Babcock and Seth Babcock.

I enjoyed Mrs. Herndon as a teacher, mentor and a friend. She always had a smile and was so positive and uplifting. She taught me to dress for the job I wanted not the job I had. I will never forget her.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
