Cheryl J. (Christie) Kerns, a long time Woburn resident, passed away peacefully on October 8th. The cherished wife of Deacon William E. Kerns, had shared 57 wonderful years.
Born in Winchester, Cheryl was the daughter of the late Otis and Mary (Hubbard) Christie. Raised and educated in Woburn, she graduated from Woburn High School along with the class of 1965. During her high school years, Cheryl was an active participant and talented baton twirler/ majorette. Throughout her high school years, she and several other friends also participated in the "St. Joseph's Church Minstral Show", where she was introduced to Bill Kerns, which was the beginning of a life long journey.
They married in 1968 and were devoted parents to four children. Together, they created a warm and loving home filled with laughter, joy, and cherished memories.
Cheryl worked for the City of Woburn, retiring only in 2024. Diagnosed with cancer in 2020, Cheryl was a fighter who never lost her faith. Cheryl was a beacon of great faith, positivity and strength, not only for her family, but for all who knew her. Her resilience, faith and unwavering spirit was an inspiration to everyone around her, demonstrating the true meaning of grace and dignity under pressure.
Cheryl cherished the fall season! This time of year was particularly enjoyable for the Kerns family. Apple picking , making all sorts of special treats and preparation for the hosting of holidays, especially Thanksgiving was in the making. An avid cook, she delighted in preparing meals for her loved ones.
Over the years as the children were all growing up, many happy, happy times were spent at their summer home in Seabrook. This was a time for family and friends to gather, sharing the true delights of summer!
As the children got older, Bill and Cheryl frequently visited Ogunquit, where they relished long strolls on the beach, delightful seafood dinners, and breathtaking sunset walks along the Marginal Way.
Cheryl had a deep love for animals, especially cats, she adored her cat Bella.
Becoming "Nanny" was a role that Cheryl relished! Spending time with her grandchildren brought her complete joy. From dance recitals, sporting events, and educational accolades, to sharing birthdays, holidays and any other individual and familial happenings, were near and dear to Cheryl's heart.
As we remember Cheryl, we are reminded of her most gentle spirit, dedication to family and friends, and the indelible mark she left on the world. Her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to her husband, Bill, Cheryl is survived by her children, who will deeply miss her: William Darin Kerns of Woburn, Darlene T. Abreu and her husband, Steven, of Woburn, Deanna T. Allard and her husband, Keith, of Groton, and Dara T. Kerns along with her fiancé, Jason Waterhouse, of Wilmington. She is also the beloved sister of Janice Sharkey and her husband, Kenneth, from New York, and Gary Christie and his late wife, Caryn, from New Hampshire. Cheryl was cherished "Nanny" to Darin, Dylan, and Dustin Kerns; Brett and Brooke Abreu; Alexa and Connor Allard; and Jordyn and Jenna Waterhouse.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn on Tuesday, October 14th at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Stoneham. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to calling hours on Monday, October 13th, from 3 to 7 p.m. Remembrances may be made in Cheryl's memory to the Pat Brody Shelter for Cats, PO Box 142, Lunenburg, MA 01462.
