Cheryl Schmidt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson Funeral Home - Augusta on Feb. 22, 2026.
Cheryl Rae Schmidt, better known as Sherry, daughter of Ervin and Dorothy (Granger) Shermo, was born on July 17, 1947. She was raised alongside her brother and sister in rural Strum, where she attended elementary school in Strum and later Eleva- Strum High School.

Following her education, Sherry was united in marriage to Edward Brixen and to union three children were born; Todd, Tony, and Tracy. During this time she made her home in the Strum area. She later moved to the Osseo area and married Edwin Norris. To this marriage she was blessed with the birth of her daughter Jennifer.

On October 13, 1990, Sherry was united in marriage to James Schmidt. Together they shared many years in the rural Fairchild area of Eau Claire County, building a life centered on family and home.

Sherry dedicated much of her working life to caring for others. She worked as a CNA at the Osseo Area Nursing Home and later at the Fall Creek Area Nursing Home. At the time of her retirement from Fall Creek, she was serving as the nursing home Activity Assistant, a position she truly enjoyed. She had a natural gift for caring for residents and brightening their days.

Outside of work, Sherry found joy in gardening, was an avid shopper, enjoyed camping and fishing throughout Wisconsin, and above all, cherished time spent with family and friends. Being surrounded by those she loved brought her the greatest happiness.

In September of 2025, due to failing health, Sherry entered Dove Healthcare Center in Osseo, and the following month Jim joined her there. It was at Dove Healthcare that she passed away with her family by her side, early Saturday morning, February 21, 2026, having reached the age of 78 years, 7 months, and 4 days.

Sherry will be dearly missed by her son, Tony Brixen of Osseo: daughters, Tracy Brixen of Strum, Jenny (Bruce) Smith of Eleva; daughter-in-law Teresa Brixen of Menomonie; 9 grandchildren, Jacob (Tammy) Gregory, Tyler Brixen (Aleah Kaeding), Makayla (Andrew) Blattner, Hunter (Brook) Brixen, Qortnee and Qwinton Dunham and Kodee (Bekky)Dunham, Dustin and Charles Smith; 8 cherished great grandchildren, with two more blessings expected soon; 2 step-daughters, Jamie (Rick) Branter of Eau Claire, Theresa (Randy) Peterson of Augusta; step-son Ora (Twyla) Schmidt of Eau Claire; and their families; brother, Jim (Vickie) Shermo of Sturm; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gloria (Ronald) Watson of Rockford, IL, Susan Olinger of Eau Claire, Lois (Greg) Laufenberg of Osseo, Jane Schmidt of Augusta; many nieces, nephews and their families.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Dorothy; husband Jim on Nov. 18, 2025; son Todd Brixen; daughter-in-law Jenny Brixen; son-in-law Patrick Holstad; father and mother-in-law, Marlin and Josephine Schmidt; step-son James Bradley Schmidt; brothers-in-law Rick Schmidt and David Olinger.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with a visitation beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

The family is deeply grateful to the staff and residents of Dove Healthcare Center for the exceptional care and friendship they provided.

They would also like to extend a special thank you to the St. Croix Hospice team, especially Karyn and Taylor, who became very dear to her. The love and compassion shown to her will never be forgotten.
