Cheryl Ferguson Weber

 

Cheryl Ferguson Weber, M.D. (also known as Cherry to her schoolmates) passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 70 at her home in Lubbock, TX, surrounded by friends, family, and one beloved mutt dog.

 

Cheryl was born on February 13, 1953, in Alamogordo, NM, the eldest of three daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents Tilford and Betty Ferguson and sister Mary Beth Ferguson.

 

Cheryl attended Alamogordo High School and then got a couple of degrees at the University of New Mexico. She was a dedicated scholar (of anthropology, medicine, and religion, among other subjects). In her free time, Cheryl loved the outdoors and was an active member of the Lubbock Bike Club and of the West Texas Running Club and participated in triathlons and cross-country skiing.

 

Cheryl began her career as an archaeologist in northwestern NM with the Bureau of Land Management. Her expertise in the field led her to contribute a chapter on Puebloan skeletal finds in the book "Tijeras Canyon: Analyses of the Past.” We suggest everyone pick up a copy.

 

Her love of anatomy took her back to school to study medicine at UNM in Albuquerque, which turned out be a good move not only for her career, but also because that is when and where she met an amiable bike mechanic who she later married and spent the next 42 years happily beside. Cycling brought them together and continued to be a shared passion that lasted their entire lives.

 

After completing her M.D., Cheryl spent 28 years in rehab medicine, specializing in the diagnosis of peripheral nerve injuries and diseases.

 

Cheryl was blessed to make Covenant Presbyterian Church her spiritual home, and she found solace and strength in her faith and in Covenant’s tight-knit community. Cheryl and Fred were drawn to the church because of their centering prayer group.

 

Anyone who knew Cheryl would agree that she was fiercely independent and proud of her fitness, swimming at the Tech Rec Center several times a week and walking her dog, Sammy, and later Murphy, all over her Tech Terrace neighborhood.

 

Cheryl will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her nieces Melissa Weber, Jenny Smith, and Leigha Rynae Basham; her nephews Brad Smith and Kyle Basham; and her sister Kerry Basham. She is also survived by her husband Fred Weber and her daughter Amy Weber. Cheryl will be remembered by the many who loved her for her unwavering determination, her love for the outdoors, and her dedication to her career and family.

 

Family and friends are invited to her Celebration of Life on December 13th at 2:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4600 48th St, Lubbock, TX.
