**Obituary for Chester "Chet" S. Swalm**
Chester "Chet" Saevar Swalm, 82, the rugged Viking, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, Gail, the love of his life, and both of his daughters. Reykjavik, Iceland welcomed Chet into the world on January 24, 1943, and
Leland, North Carolina bid him farewell on June 17, 2025. He and his wife, Gail, lived in Leland for 6 years, following 43 years spent living in Wallkill, New York.
Chet was a proud graduate of Tufts University, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a walking "Book of Knowledge" who knew everything and wasn't afraid to make up an answer if he didn't. He had a dry sense of humor that got more funny with each glass. Chet loved game nights with his friends and grilling for his grandchildren. He also loved to golf and was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed his volunteering at the Friends of The Wallkill Library Used Book Store, where he shared his love of books. Chet was a proud Icelander who drew great strength from the small nation. Like a true Viking, he left this world on Iceland's Independence Day. He will be missed by his family, his friends and his four legged best friend, Ruby.
Surviving is his loving wife, Gail Swalm; two daughters, Jennifer Buschta and Kathelene Canosa (Christopher); six grandchildren: Cailin, Jack, Michael and Dominick Canosa and Stephanie and Benjamin Buschta; one sister, Barbara Swalm; a sister-in-law, Cecelia Glaviano and husband, Vincent Mancuso; a brother-in-law, Richard Glaviano and wife, Debby; eleven nieces and nephews, many close cousins in New York and Iceland and his beloved Golden Retriever, Ruby.
Chet was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Heitha Swalm, and his sister, Linda Swalm.
At Chet's request, no formal services will be held at this time.
