Chester Twarog Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home on Aug. 4, 2025.
Chester Twarog, a beloved family man, esteemed meteorologist, and decorated Air Force veteran, passed away at the age of 75 on July 29, 2025, at Sedgewood Commons in Brunswick, Maine. Born on March 27, 1950, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Chester's life was marked by his dedication to his family, his passion for the sciences, and his adventurous spirit.

Chester grew up in a household in Springfield and later moved to Ludlow, where he attended Ludlow High School. His love for learning and the natural world led him to further his education at Holyoke Community College, followed by Salem State College where he received a Bachelor Degree in Earth Science. Later he continued his education at a Weather School in Champaign, Illinois. His educational journey laid the foundation for a distinguished career in meteorology that spanned several decades.

Professionally, Chester was highly regarded in his field. He dedicated many years as a meteorologist and weather technician with the National Weather Service, where his work was essential in forecasting and weather analysis. His commitment to his country was equally noteworthy, as he served in the Air Force for 20 years. During his tenure, he worked on the Naval Base in Brunswick, Maine, bringing his expertise as a weather technician and meteorologist to the military, a role he performed with distinction and pride.

His passion for studying the skies propelled Chester to a passion for flying. He earned a pilot license and enjoyed flying Cessna Planes.

Chester's military service saw him and his family move to various locations, including Denver, Colorado; Fort Devens, Massachusetts: Germany: Mountain Home, Idaho. In 2015, Jan and Chester retired and moved to Brunswick, Maine.

These relocations not only illustrated his adaptability but also fueled his love for adventure. He embarked on extraordinary expeditions, such as hiking the glaciers in Greenland, which showcased his fearless and exploratory nature.

An avid outdoorsman, Chester found solace and joy in the embrace of nature. He was passionate about camping, canoeing, and swimming, activities that allowed him to immerse himself in the environments he so deeply appreciated. His physical endurance was also evident in his commitment to running, having completed several marathons over the years, a testament to his discipline and strength.

Chester's intellectual curiosity was as vast as the landscapes he traversed. He was an ardent reader, with a particular interest in science fiction, astronomy and nature... His imagination was often sparked by the fantastic worlds and intricate details contained within the pages, which provided him with endless hours of enjoyment and reflection.

Left to honor Chester's memory is his loving wife of many years, Janet E. (Dobson) Twarog; his sons, Eric Centauri and his wife Laurie of Auburn, Washington, and Timothy Twarog of Pittsford, New York; his sister Janet Delonga of Holbrook; his step-sister, Susan Yerkes and her husband John of Agawam; and the legacy of his late brother Michael Twarog and his wife Joan of Chicopee, MA, and late step-sister Donna Lajoie and her late husband Bruce. Chester's warmth, wisdom, and humor also live on through his cherished nieces and nephews.

Chester Twarog's life was a tapestry of meaningful connections, intellectual pursuits, and heartfelt contributions to his community and nation. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him, but his influence will continue to resonate through the lives he touched and the natural wonders he so passionately explored. Chester's journey through life was as dynamic as the weather patterns he studied, and his memory will be treasured as a beacon of love, adventure, and discovery.
