Richard Carrara Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home on Feb. 27, 2026.
Richard T. "Rich" Carrara, age 94, passed away on February 27 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Rich Carrara was born in Canton, MA, in 1931.

He earned a master's degree in engineering from Merrimack College, the same college where he met his wife, Carli. Married for more than 60 years, together they shaped each other's worlds and touched the hearts of many.

He was involved in many company start-ups, the most pivotal being the founder of ISI (Industrial Sensors Inc.), a manufacturer of melt pressure sensors used as safety devices in extrusion. This product, on which he held a co-patent on many years earlier, helped establish the entire melt pressure market as it stands today. The lives this product has saved can be attributed to his knowledge and efforts.

A lover of food and wine, Rich traveled the world and loved sharing his travel stories and experiences with anyone and everyone he met. He frequently hosted wine tastings for his neighbors, pairing each wine with a story or place he had visited, making it feel as though you were there with him. His charisma was infectious, and his inquisitiveness made you feel like you were the most important person in the room whenever you were with him.

Aside from his many accomplishments as an engineer, entrepreneur, and mentor, those who knew Rich best will remember him as a loving grandfather, great grandfather, father, husband, and, to many, a great friend.

When he retired, he moved with Carli to their home in Hebron, NH, where he spent his days sailing, boating, and raking the beach. Later, as their family grew, Rich and Carli returned to the Canton area so they could spend more time with their grandchildren. Most recently, and most notably, he devoted himself to researching and writing stories about war heroes from the town of Canton who passed in the line of duty.

Rich will now be reunited with his beloved wife, Carli, who passed in 2021, and with his son Garrett, who passed in 2022. He will forever remain in the thoughts of Michael Carrara of Boston; Stacy Chambers and her husband, John, of Canton; and Matthew Carrara and his wife, Nina, of Canton. His legacy and memory will live on through his grandchildren - Nicholas, Benjamin, Jack, Olivia, Adam, Gianna and Isabella - and his great granddaughter, Naomi.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home on Saturday, March 7th, from 2-5 pm. Burial is private.
