Chevalier Ann Johnson, 89, of Erie, received her wings on Monday, May 27, 2024, at her son's
condominium home in Savannah, Georgia doing what she loved, relaxing on the deck watching
golf while enjoying the summer breeze.
She was born in Burkesville, Kentucky on September 15, 1934, to the late Frank and Annamae
Crabtree. At an early age, she attended the Shiloh Baptist Church, watching her mother play the
piano and praising the Lord through music and song.
She attended East High and was a majorette, cheerleader, and joined various clubs. She grew up
and married the love of her life, Junius Raymond (a.k.a. Doodlebug) Her mission in life was to
serve others. She began her career as a nurse at Hamot hospital. However, she saw so many
young people needing guidance and support that she then chose to work at O.I.C., the A.C.T
and the Booker T. Washington Centers where she could be hands-on and directly impact the
lives of young people. She focused on bringing culture to their lives. She began by teaching
young ladies the art of ballet and jazz dance, running track and how to conduct themselves as
ladies.
The Executive Director of the Booker T. Washington Center, Mr. Earnest Denny, saw the jewel
that he had and promoted her to the business office where she wrote many grants for youth and
senior programs. Together they provided several food services, and educational programs to
enhance students' academic growth. Many young people benefited from her programs. She
found her calling and gained many extended sons and daughters in the community. She also
became a daughter of Gem City Elks Club and a member of St. John's Catholic Church where
she attended regularly until she couldn't anymore. During her later years, she enjoyed taking
daily rides with her son, Junius. You could see her on a regular basis on Facebook riding,
smiling, eating ice cream, and listening to Bruno Mars. She spent her last month with her son,
Ted, watching golf and again eating ice cream. She will be dearly missed by all.
She was proceeded in death by husband, Junius R. Johnson (Doodlebug), son, Raymond
Johnson, Sister Francis Wales, and brother, Douglass Boss Crabtree.
She leaves to cherish her memory, brother William McKinney (Sandra), sons Theodore Johnson
(Barbara), and Junius Johnson (Carla); two special cousins Emma Mason (Delbert), and Susan
Hall (Richard). Ten (10) grandchildren, (15) great-grandchildren, (7) great-great grandchildren
and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
There will be a celebration of life on Thursday, June 6 th at 11:30 am at St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church located at 509 East 26 th Street Erie Pa.

She was always a joy to see at the golf tourneys and riding with you around town. She raised good sons for sure. Sorry for your loss. My sympathy.
