Christopher Michael Wataru Tanaka, a remarkably talented musician whose spirit resonated with all those fortunate enough to know him, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in Lubbock at the age of 51. Born on March 1, 1974, in San Francisco, California, Chris lived a life defined by his unwavering passion for music, a dedication to learning, and an extraordinary ability to forge friendships. Chris graduated from Coronado High School and had degrees from South Plains College and Texas Tech University. Chris had a knack for technology and had vast knowledge of everything Apple.

Chris started playing the guitar at the age of 16 and later learned to play the piano and bass. He played in several bands at many different venues over the past 30 years. Chris was a football enthusiast who loved college football and was a die hard Cowboys fan. He was known to savor every moment cooking for his family and found joy in the companionship of animals, especially dogs.

His charming personality was characterized by his sweetness, humor, and wit, yet those who knew him also recognized his stubborn nature. This determination became particularly notable in 1994 when Chris faced the daunting challenge of being diagnosed with a progressive eye disease that eventually took his vision in 2011. For the last 15 months of his life, Chris fought a courageous cancer battle, embodying a warrior's spirit that inspired all around him. His legacy is one of strength, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

In 2005, Chris met the love of his life, Robin. They had a fairytale wedding on November 1, 2009, at the Texas Renaissance Festival. He is survived by his wife, Robin Tanaka; step-children, Ashley Hardage, and Jaron Hardage and his wife Sierra, all of Lubbock; brothers, Jay Tanaka and his wife Allison of Sunnyvale, California, as well as Kendal Smith of Athena, Texas; step-mother, Colleen Thompson of Durham, North Carolina; grandchildren, Kyler, Chloe, Alton, Eliana, and Sagan, as well as his niece and nephew, Mei and Cole.

Chris was preceded in death by his father, Hank Tanaka and mother, Marianne Tanaka.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 pm, Friday, August 15, 2025 at Venue on Broadway. The family would like to encourage all their friends and family to donate blood in honor of Chris - Vitalant Blood Donation, 2523 48th Street in Lubbock.
