Christine Alex nee Demetriou, a beloved resident of Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025. Born in Greece, Christine's life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication. She was united in a prearranged marriage to Gus Alex on May 18, 1950, in Greece, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey. Gus brought her to the United States, where he had established a candy store in downtown Joliet called the Sweet Shop, which he had opened during the challenging years of the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Christine devoted herself to her family as a stay-at-home mom, raising their son, David, with unwavering care. After David's upbringing, she joined her husband at the Sweet Shop, where she learned the art of crafting homemade candies-a skill she mastered and cherished. The couple worked side by side, filling the shop with the warmth of their labor and love until Gus's passing in 1982.
Undeterred by loss, Christine carried on the family business with strength and grace for a couple of years, ensuring its legacy endured. She eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and devotion.
Christine will be deeply missed by her son David, her extended family, and the many friends and customers whose lives she touched with her kindness and homemade treats.
Funeral Service will be held Wednesday June 25, 2025 at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 1401 Wagner Road, Glenview, IL. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 23060 W. Jefferson St, Joliet, IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church or All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.
May her memory be eternal.
