Christopher Chmela Obituary
Christopher C. Chmela, affectionately known as Chris to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 69. Born on March 2, 1954, in Allentown, Chris was a cherished son to his late parents, Charles and Ida (Keller) Chmela. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Chris is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Patricia (Carty) Chmela, his daughter, Rebecca Bennett and her husband Christopher, and his adoring grandchildren, Benjamin (9), Cole (6), and Tyler (3). He will also be missed by his canine companion Gracie.
Chris's early education was completed at Central Catholic High School, where he graduated with the class of 1972. He continued his studies at Ryder Technical School, earning his degree in 1974. His professional life was largely dedicated to Bell and Howell, where he made significant contributions as an electronics engineer and technician.
A man of faith and service, Chris was a long time member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, where he served as the Sound Technician for over four decades. His commitment to the church and its community was unwavering, and his service was a testament to his loving and kind nature.
Chris was also an Eagle Scout, a title that spoke to his character and his love for the outdoors. His adventurous spirit led him to enjoy activities such as skiing and riding waves at the beach. A lover of animals, especially dogs, Chris found joy in walking them and the companionship they offered. His hands were rarely still, as he was always tinkering and fixing things around the house, earning him the affectionate nickname "Mr. Fix It." His skills were not just a hobby but a way of helping others, which he did with a smile.
An avid swimmer, Chris loved to spend his leisure time doing laps in the pool, a practice that not only kept him fit but also brought him great peace and relaxation. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. Chris cherished every moment spent with his grandsons, whether he was teaching them new skills, playing pool and games, throwing a baseball, or simply enjoying a hug and their presence.
Services: A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2700 Jacksonville Rd, Bethlehem, PA 18017, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 10 A.M. until time of the service in the church. Chris's arrangements have been entrusted to the Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com.
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Everlasting Life Ministries, 224 N 6th St, Allentown, PA 18102 or to an Animal rescue of your choosing.
