Christopher Cooley Obituary

Officer Cooley was more than a dedicated officer-he was a true public servant who embodied the spirit of community. Known affectionately as "Unicorn"-a nickname born during field training radio transmissions-he carried that same fun, energetic, and kindhearted nature throughout his service. Whether it was sharing stickers with children, deputizing them to keep their parents in line, or chasing down speeders who thought they could race through town, Officer Cooley's presence always brought a mix of laughter, safety, and reassurance to Greensboro.
His commitment extended far beyond patrol. He had a deep passion for weather and storm chasing, making sure the town of Greensboro, IN stayed informed and prepared. He also played an instrumental role in public outreach, serving as part of the social media team, photographer, and video producer-always bringing creative new ideas to connect with the community he loved.
Though his passing comes as a great shock, we remain inspired by the legacy he leaves behind: one of courage, joy, service, and excellence.
Christopher will be lovingly remembered by his mom, Judy Cottrell; sisters, Stephanie Derringer and Lisa Derringer; three nephews, two nieces; one great nephew, two great nieces; and his aunt, Glenda Mink.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Bruce Cooley; and grandparents, Norman and Anna Mink.
Please check back for details announcing a celebration of life hosted by the Greensboro Police Department. This will be an open house event held at the Greensboro Community Center open to everyone and will include a dedication of Chris's final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Christopher "Officer Unicorn" Cooley, the family respectfully requests that contributions be made to the Greensboro Police Department.
Arrangements have been entrusted to G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN.
