Christopher J. Monteiro, 44, died Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, after an extended period of declining health. He was the cherished partner of Maria De Fatima Salvador and the loving and devoted stepfather to Kaleb A. Salvador of Stoughton. Chris was the son of the late John and Loretta (Victoria) Monteiro of Pawtucket, RI. Born in Providence and raised in Pawtucket, RI, he was a graduate of William E. Tolman Sr. High School. After graduation, Chris earned his associate degree in Fire Science and Emergency Services from Community College of Rhode Island in 1999 and then earned his bachelor’s degree in public safety from American Public University in 2009.
Chris joined the United States Coast Guard Axillary, which began his life-long call to service and helping others. His proudest vocational achievement was becoming a firefighter and EMT with the Lonsdale Fire Department, in Lincoln, RI, for four years and “running into burning buildings” as he would say. Regrettably, his firefighting career was severed after volunteering at Ground Zero at the World Trade Center in New York City and suffering an injury that plagued his health for many years. Despite being hailed as a hero, Chris modestly asserted, “I was just doing my job.” This setback did not prevent him from continuing with his passion for helping others. In addition to being a firefighter and EMT, Chris worked for the New England Search and Rescue in Rhode Island; he was a Firefighter/Fleet Safety Officer for Norwegian Cruise Line; he was an Operations Supervisor for Lifeline Ambulance; and was a Fire Support Specialist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Most recently, Chris worked as a Mass Bay Responder for the Salvation Army in providing aid to disaster-stricken communities. Colleagues fondly remember his golden heart and sense of humor which lightened their load during very stressful situations.
Over the past few years, Chris has endured several surgeries and escalating health problems but did so with a positive outlook, remarkable strength, and a touch of dark humor. He enjoyed traveling and taking out of state road trips with his loving partner, Maria and stepson, Kaleb. He loved camping, riding his Harley, spending time in Florida, and simply being with his beloved service dog, Reed. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with the ones he loved.
In addition to his partner, Maria, and stepson, Kaleb, Chris is survived by his brother Michael Monteiro of Massachusetts. He was the son-in-law of Jose and Etelvina Salvador of Stoughton and the brother-in-law of Joseph and Maria Eattimo of Wrentham. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. There are no words to describe how much he was loved and will be missed. Rest in the sweetest peace, Chris. Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27) Stoughton, on Friday at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday from 4-7 PM. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army or to Hero Pups.
