Claire Logan Obituary

Visit the Hall-Wynne Funeral Service & Crematory - Durham website to view the full obituary.

Claire Elizabeth Logan died peacefully at home on August 17, 2025 from complications of trisomy 13. She was 6 years old.

Claire, sometimes called "Claire Bear" and "Claire de Lune," was born and baptized at Duke University Hospital on March 19, 2019. She had a deep love of snuggles from her mom and dad, and loved hearing her brother, Simon, play with and talk to her. Eventually, her little sister, Olive, would be born and she enjoyed hearing Olive talk to her while bringing her toy after toy.

Claire loved music, especially Raffi and Sylvan Esso, and she loved playing with noisy toys. She once earned the nickname "DJ Claire" from her doctors during a hospital stay, when she was playing with musical toddler toys with both her hands and feet. She needed frequent hospital stays during her first year of life, but really enjoyed her time between hospital stays at home, doing her first big belly laugh at only 3 months old. Eventually she would spend more than a year between hospital stays, enjoying playing with her family at home and listening to her songs on Spotify for nearly all hours of the day. She could be a little bit ornery and was an absolute joy to her family.]

Claire was cared for by many wonderful medical professionals and therapists, but her parents would especially like to thank Dr. Neal deJong, Dr. Martha Snyder, Dr. Sophia Paraschos, and Dr. George Hucks, along with the nurses at Duke University Hospital, UNC Hospital Chapel Hill, and Transitions Kids, the counselors and chaplains at Duke University Hospital and Transitions Kids, and Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church for their support.

One of the great honors of Claire's life, and her parents' lives, is that her photos and data were included in a journal article in the American Journal of Medical Genetics, "Surveillance guidelines for children with trisomy 13," which offers medical professionals ways to care for children with trisomy 13 who live beyond infancy. In July 2025, the American Academy of Pediatrics gave new guidelines for caring for babies born with trisomy 13, saying that it is no longer considered incompatible with life based on diagnosis alone, and these babies should be offered medical care and screenings based on their individual needs. Claire and other children like her have been paving the way for future babies who will be born with trisomy 13 to be better cared for, and her parents could not be more proud of her.

Claire will be loved and missed beyond words. "You were a presence full of light upon this earth, and I am a witness to your life and to its worth." - The Mountain Goats

Claire is survived by her parents, Emily and Jason Logan; her siblings, Simon and Olive Logan; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 AM Monday, August 25 at Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1902 Perry St, Durham, NC 27705. A viewing and family visitation will also be held Monday at 10:00 AM until service time in the church fellowship hall. Claire will be buried privately in the churchyard of Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Emily and Jason Logan, Mark Schubert, Kaitlin Patterson, Kyle Headlee, and Daryl Throckmorton.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Claire's palliative care and hospice team that cared for her from before she was born, until after her death - Transitions Kids, or to UNC Children's Hospital, who cared for Claire so well. Arrangements are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
