Claire B. (Donovan) McHugh, age 89, a longtime resident of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025 at DYouville Life & Wellness Community in Lowell. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald F. McHugh.
She was born in Charlestown on February 21,1936 and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Sweeney) Donovan.
Prior to her retirement, Claire had worked as a private duty nurse and was also a nurse at Mediplex in Lowell. Earlier in her career she had worked at St. Josephs Hospital in Lowell and Tewksbury State Hospital.
She was an avid reader, liked to play golf and enjoyed spending time at the beach. Claire loved social gatherings and parties, but most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and friends.
Claire is survived by her loving children, Donna Underwood and her husband Bernard of Dracut, Robert McHugh of Lowell, Joseph McHugh of Lowell, and Paula Ryan and her husband Robert of Hudson, NH; her grandchildren, Michael Underwood of Lowell, Jennifer Kinsella and her husband Benjamin of Dracut, Keith McCarthy and his partner Kaylin Weber of Madison, WI, Benjamin McCarthy and his wife Casey of Hudson, NH, and Lily and Brinna McHugh of Lowell; her great-granddaughters, Emily Claire Sweeney, Josephine and Cecelia Kinsella, and Carter McCarthy. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Donovan, and Jeannine Donovan, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Claire is predeceased by her siblings, James Donovan and his wife Betty, Helen Downey and her husband Richard, Bea Grover and her husband Fred, Arthur Donovan, Mary Gagne and her husband Robert and John Donovan.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 4pm to 7pm at DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Ave., DRACUT. Her funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 23, 2025 at 10am. Interment will be held privately.
