With profound love and heartfelt gratitude, we celebrate the life of Clarence Dillard, Jr., who transitioned peacefully on May 18, 2025. Born January 3, 1942, in West Virginia to Clarence Dillard, Sr. and Mattie Belle Stewart Dillard, Clarence was the third of thirteen children and a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Clarence's journey began with humble roots and a tireless work ethic, nurtured by early experiences working alongside his grandfather and helping care for his younger siblings. These formative years taught him resilience.
A determined student, playing football and recognized for his beautiful bass voice. Clarence graduated from Kimball High School at just 16 years old, Not long after, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he began building a life rooted in perseverance.
Soon after settling in Columbus, Clarence married Fronie Mae, and to this union were born three children: Barry, Clarence III, and Tonya Renae. A devoted father, Clarence worked multiple jobs to provide a stable and loving home, modeling dedication, faith, and strength.
Clarence spent more than 25 years at Buckeye Steel, where he rose to the position of shift supervisor and became a respected union leader, championing fairness and justice in the workplace. His leadership and principles earned the admiration of both colleagues and the community.
In 1986, Clarence began a new chapter in construction, joining Washington Brothers Construction, where he worked with pride and expertise until retiring in 2006. A proud member of the Laborers' International Union of North America, Clarence was a skilled tradesman-pouring concrete, laying foundations, and finishing projects with unmatched precision. He wasn't just building structures-he was building a legacy of excellence.
In 1978, Clarence married the love of his life, Sheila Ann Young. Together, they welcomed their daughter Kyra Jozzette and created a home filled with music, laughter, and unwavering faith. For over four decades, Clarence and Sheila served together at Christ Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a devoted Deacon, Trustee, and a member of both the Celestial and Pastoral Choirs. He also volunteered in the food pantry, Katherine Café, and countless church beautification projects-always with joy and humility.
Clarence was also a fixture in the Southside Columbus community. As a Little League football coach for the Southside Stallions, he mentored and uplifted countless young boys, many of whom saw him as more than a coach-as a father figure and role model.
Beyond his roles as husband, father, worker, and church leader, Clarence was most proud to be "Papa." He was a dedicated and present grandfather, attending games, performances, and school events. He was even honored as a classroom volunteer, recognized for his consistent presence and positive influence. Clarence never hesitated to lend a hand-whether it meant driving his siblings to appointments or making sure his grandchildren got where they needed to be. He showed up, every time, with quiet strength and genuine love.
In his retirement years, Clarence found peace in slowing down and enjoying time with those closest to him. He especially cherished the bond he shared with his neighbor Dana Dowdell, who was like a son to him, and his dear friend and caregiver Pearl Brooks, whose companionship brought comfort and joy in his final chapter.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sheila Ann Young Dillard; his son, Barry Dillard; his parents; and siblings Alphonzo, Douglas, Charles, Lesley, Christopher, Terry, Barbara Jean, and Naomi.
He leaves to cherish his memory:
Children: Clarence Dillard III, Tonya (Adrien) Gainey, Kyra (Tim) Wright, and daughter-in-love Rochelle (Barry)
