Mount Vernon – Clarence Richard Lawson, Jr., formerly of Walhonding, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at the Knox Community Hospital.
Clarence was born in Cleveland on June 20, 1929. He was the son of the late Clarence R. and Pauline (Titus) Lawson. He was married to Ethel Jeannette Hiser on June 6, 1953, who preceded him in death on April 23, 2005. Clarence served as a minister for many area churches over the years, as well as in Oklahoma, and Indiana, where he started. He also formed his own ministry with the Ohio Christian Prison Outreach that he was active with into his late 80s. He was a member and Elder at the former Walhonding Church of Christ, and had been attending the Central Christian Church.
He enjoyed studying and sharing the Bible, reading and quoting poetry, working outdoors, airplanes, and talking with people, but most of all, he loved life. Especially his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, and his wife Ethel, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Diana Wideman; and his son, Nathan Lawson.
Surviving are his son, Brian J. Lawson (Jim Appleman) of Howard; daughter, Cheryl A. Lawson of Walhonding; grandchildren Michelle (Jeff) Jarvis, Brittani (Trever) Houpt, and Matthew (April) Lawson; great grandchildren, Alexis, Collin, R.J., Anthony, Elaina, and Nate; brother, Danny (Kay) Lawson of Tennessee, daughter-in-law, Helen Lawson, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will take place at noon on Saturday, November 22, at the Central Christian Church, 17833 Gambier Rd. Mount Vernon, 43050. Pastor Andy Beatty will officiate. Burial will follow in Brinkhaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
