Claude Spence, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and published
author, peacefully passed away on October 21, 2024, at the age of 75, after a long and
courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 11, 1949, in Seminole, Texas, he was the
son of Lillian and Dale Spence. From an early age, Claude embodied the spirit of a true
cowboy and farmer, embracing the values of hard work, resilience, and integrity that
would define his life.
Growing up in Seminole, Texas, Claude developed a deep appreciation for the land and
the life of a farmer. He often spoke fondly of the joy he found in tending to his fields,
caring for animals and enjoying the simple pleasures that country life offered. These
experiences shaped his character and instilled in him a profound sense of responsibility
and dedication to family and community. Claude took great pride in passing down these
values to his children, encouraging them to embrace nature and cultivate a strong work
ethic.
In April 1973, Claude married his best friend and beloved confidant, Susan Miller. Their
bond was built on a foundation of mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support.
Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love and adventure, nurturing a family
that became the heart of their lives. They raised three wonderful children: Thomas Dale,
Gregory Dale, and Teresa JoDell. Claude was immensely proud of his children,
celebrating their milestones and achievements with joy and enthusiasm. His legacy will
continue to thrive through them and his five adoring grandchildren, who brought
immeasurable happiness to his life. Their laughter and joy were a constant source of
pride, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Claude was also a gifted writer, leaving an indelible mark as a published author. His
passion for storytelling allowed him to share his experiences, wisdom, and insights with
others. Through social media, he fostered friendships and connections with people from
all walks of life, both near and far. His daily Facebook posts, including the beloved
"Donut Friday" series, brought smiles and uplifted spirits, reminding everyone of the
beauty in everyday moments. Each post was infused with his unique humor and
warmth, serving as a beacon of positivity and encouragement. His unwavering optimism
and profound words resonated with many, making him a cherished figure in the lives of
those who followed his journey.
Beyond his writing, Claude was known for his warm and welcoming nature. He had an
incredible gift for making others feel valued and loved. Friends and family around the
world cherished his genuine spirit and his ability to bring people together. Whether
through heartfelt conversations, shared laughter, or quiet moments of reflection, Claude
left an impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was the type of person
who would lend a listening ear, offer sage advice, or simply share a laugh, creating
bonds that lasted a lifetime. His home was always open to those in need, and he
welcomed everyone with open arms.
Claude is preceded in death by his father, Dale Spence, his mother, Lillian Austin
Spence Fincher; and his stepfather, Arvil Fincher.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, of Lubbock, their children, Thomas and wife Megan Spence of Brownfield,
Gregory Spence and partner Andrew Thornhill of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Teresa
Spence of Lubbock; and his cherished grandchildren, Braeden and wife Michaela
Spence of Seminole, Sydni Spence and fiancé Cory Jellison of San Angelo, Kathryn
and Robert Brightbill of Lubbock, Trevor Brightbill of Abernathy, and Alexis Fraley,
Hailey Fraley, and Zaiyre Estrada of Brownfield. He is also survived by his sister,
Patricia Ferrell of Oklahoma City, his brother, Ronnie Spence of Seminole, and
numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.
Throughout his life, Claude exemplified the values of kindness, strength, and dedication
to family. He was a man who lived with intention, finding joy in the little things and
imparting those lessons to others. He understood the importance of community and the
value of relationships, often reminding his family and friends to cherish each moment
together. His spirit and love for life will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew
him. Claude leaves behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom that will continue
to inspire generations to come.
As we remember Claude, let us carry forward his message of love, encouragement, and
the importance of cherishing every moment. May his memory be a blessing, and may
