Clay Edward VanGilder, 65, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Sunday morning, April 20, 2025, at his home. He was born on June 24, 1959, in Lamar, Missouri, the son of the late Charles VanGilder and Dorothy (Havens) VanGilder.
Clay's early years were spent in California, where he graduated from El Modena High School in 1977. His education laid the foundation for a successful career as a claim's specialist with TFI Trucking, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and his ability to bring a smile to the faces of his colleagues. Clay married Wendy Bell on October 8, 1979 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Beyond his professional life, Clay's heart was truly at home. He was the life of every family gathering, whether it was a casual dinner, a sporting event, or a summer barbeque. His presence was a guarantee of laughter and warmth, and his absence will be felt at every future gathering.
Those who knew Clay will remember him as the embodiment of three simple yet powerful words: funny, friendly, and loving. His humor was a gift that he shared generously, never missing an opportunity to lighten the mood or cheer someone up. His friendliness extended beyond his family and friends, touching the lives of everyone he met. Above all, his love for his family was unwavering, a constant source of comfort and security.
Clay's life was a testament to the value of family and the joy of togetherness. Survivors include his devoted wife of 45 years, Wendy VanGilder; his children, Kelley Szulakiewicz (Frank), Michelle Smith (Shaun), and Keith VanGilder (Rachelle), all of Carthage; his grandchildren, Adan White, Avery Smith, Devin Smith, Ashlynn VanGilder, and Kaysen VanGilder; his great-grandchild, Nova Gouker-White; his brothers, David VanGilder (Steve), Oceanside, California, and Mark VanGilder (Janet), Hemet, California; and many extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gary VanGilder.
Per Clay's wishes, there was cremation. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.

If you ever met Clay, you never forgot his smile and his laugh! Such a kind and funny man. BWJ was a better place when he was around. RIP Clay.

There's not a memory I have of clay that doesn't include laughter and smiles. He was the best prankster at BWJ when I worked with him. Sending prayers and love to his family.

Wendy...I just heard about Clay. I always liked working with Clay, and I am sorry to hear that he passed away. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I worked with Clay in the Safety department at Conway/CFI awhile back. Clay was a great guy, so positive and always smiling. I uploaded a picture from around 2012 that Clay is in with some others from Safety. Wishing your family comfort during this difficult time.
