Clifton was welcomed home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 23, 2025, at Coronado Care in Portales, NM, which was his home for the last seven months. He was 96 years of age. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, 10:00 am at Floyd Cemetery in Floyd, NM followed by Funeral services at 1:00 pm Third and Kilgore Church of Christ, 1701 E. Third Street, Portales, NM.
Clifton was the youngest of nine children born to Charley and Ida Barbee Gossett. He was born in Tahoka, Texas on May 11, 1929. Clifton grew up in Texas and New Mexico. He was cherished by his family. As a young boy he would help his family pick cotton, raise animals and grow crops. This is where his work ethic started. His family moved to Eastern New Mexico where he attended Floyd, NM schools. He completed 8th grade. This is where he met the one love of his life, Betty Sue Elliott. He worked on the family farm until he joined the Army in 1952. He was in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. After his discharge, he moved back to Portales, NM. He worked for Furr's Grocery store in Clovis as a meat cutter. He married Betty in Portales on July 8, 1954. They made their home in Clovis. He and Betty moved to Amarillo, TX in 1956, where he was a meat cutter for Glover Grocery. He also had a small BBQ Restaurant in Amarillo. Four of their children were born in Amarillo. Clifton and Betty moved back to Portales where he worked for Grady's Grocery. They then moved their family to Tucumcari, NM where their youngest was born. Clifton farmed for a relative while in Tucumcari. After a few years they had the opportunity to own and operate a dairy in the Floyd area, so they moved back to the area. Clifton farmed in the Portales, Floyd and Delphos areas, where he raised milo, corn, wheat, peanuts, hay grazer, alfalfa and raised cattle. He was an active member of Associated Milk Producers of America, until he sold the dairy in 1979. He continued driving a tractor until the age of 91 and driving his pickup until he was 95. When he was in his mid-80's he took the CDL licensing test and bought three Semi trucks and a trailer. He then worked driving trucks during harvest. Clifton was raised in the Baptist faith then was a member of Floyd Church of Christ, 2nd Street Church of Christ and Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales, NM. Clifton and Betty had a wonderful life together and had 64 years of marriage, before she passed in 2019.
Clifton is survived by his children; Gina Davis, David Gossett, Blinda Gossett, Jason Gossett (Beth) and Brent Gossett (Marnie), grandchildren; Mallory Robbins (Arnis), Clay Davis (Ashleigh), Kaci Powell, Chase Gossett (Becca), Grant Gossett (Stephanie), Derek Gossett (Alex), Charlie Gossett, Caleb Gossett, Aden Gossett (Leandra) and Ella Gossett, great grandchildren; Evie and Jack Robbins, Cagen and Carter Davis, Jazlyn Salazar, Elliott, Adalyn, Gracie, Evangelie, Rutiger, Henry, Clifton, Zander, David James and Axell Gossett, sisters and brother in laws; Mary Burch (Loy), Trelma Elliott, Joan Goyne, Rose Rector, Tommy Elliott (Mary Nell), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, all his siblings and their spouses; Bertha Odom (Earl), Virgil Gossett (Thelma), Preston Gossett (Ruth), Roy Gossett (Frances), Cecil Gossett, E.J. Gossett (Wanda), Baby Gossett, Travis Gossett (Alice), his brothers and sister in laws; John Henry and Alene Elliott, Houston and Lois Cavasos, Wayne and Irene Marshall, Wayne Elliott, Gene and Natalie Olmsted, Elbert Goyne, Jay and Burma Stark and Nelson Rector, his nieces; Shirley Withrow, Janice Ogden, Rita Nell Cavasos, Reva Sharp, Elliott Marshall, Frances Kreidler, Margaret Marshall, Phyllis Inman, nephews; Clifton Elliott, Robert Cavasos, Tommy Gossett, Roger Elliott, Jimmy Elliott, Omar Marshall, and Troy Goyne, great nephews; Michael Southern, Rodney Marshall and Kendon Gossett.
