Mayor Clifton Earl Williams Jr, 70, of Aurora, passed away on September 15, leaving behind a legacy of devoted public service and heartfelt commitment to his community.
Born on December 19, 1954, in Little Washington, Clif grew up with strong values of hard work, integrity, and service to others. After studying at Chowan University, he joined Aurora Industrial Supply, the family business founded by his late father, creating experiences that shaped the leadership and steady hand he later brought to town government.
Elected Mayor of Aurora in 2009, Clif served with distinction for 16 years. During his tenure, he guided the community through both times of growth and challenge, always placing the well-being of residents at the forefront. Under his leadership, Aurora saw numerous improvements to the infrastructure of the town. Most recently, he championed Bailey’s Creek nature-based tributary improvements to reduce flooding on the north side of town.
Perhaps his proudest accomplishment was conceiving the Aurora Industrial Park in 2015, a vision that became reality with the groundbreaking of Beaufort County Community College in March 2025. This project, now under construction, will stand as a cornerstone of his enduring commitment to Aurora’s future. In addition to guiding the Town Board of Commissioners on these projects, he served on Beaufort County Economic Development Advisory Committee and was a previous member of the Beaufort County Committee of 100.
Beyond public office, Clif found joy in watching his sons play sports and being there every step of the way to watch them achieve their accomplishments. He taught his sons to keep their word, to lend a hand, and to stand tall. Watching them become good men was his life’s deepest pride. Clif loved going on the boat with anyone who wanted to join him, learning new chords to play on his guitar and making sure every vehicle was immaculately clean. Those who knew him best will remember not only a respected mayor, but also a neighbor who never hesitated to lend a helping hand, share a laugh, or quietly support those in need.
Above all, Clif deeply cherished his wife, Kathy. The two shared more than 46 years of marriage, a partnership marked by devotion, respect, and love. Family and friends often remarked that their bond was an inspiration — a true example of lifelong commitment. Clif is also survived by their sons, Ryan Williams (Carly) of Summerville, SC; Dr. Michael Williams (Natashia) of Hampstead, NC; and Patrick Williams of New Bern, NC. Grandchildren - Tucker, Bodie, Camden, Lila Jo and Teagan. Sisters - Sally Burke (Ken) of Morehead City, NC and Christy McBryde (Van) of Kinston, NC. Brother-in-laws - Bobby Kokes and Kevin Kokes. As well as, many cousins, nieces and nephews that he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lee Hollowell (Pop) and Lou Poore Hollowell (Mama Lou).
Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home will host the funeral services on Saturday, September 20, 2025, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. and the service starting at 12 p.m. The family welcomes friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens to join in honoring Mayor Williams' life of service and friendship.
