Clyde Hartzog Obituary

Clyde Robert "Bob" Hartzog, 93, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at Colwich Gardens Assisted Living Facility, where he resided with his son Kyle and his beloved wife Joyce, who preceded him in death in 2024.
Bob was born on November 17, 1931, in Long Island, Kansas, to Harold Clifton Hartzog and Dena Kroeze Hartzog. Following Harold's passing in 1936, Dena married George Gillespie in 1940. Bob and his siblings were raised on a farm south of Jennings, Kansas, where he spent the remainder of his childhood.
A 1949 graduate of Jennings High School, Bob went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On December 28, 1958, Bob married Joyce Carlson. They were blessed with three children: Cheryl, Kyle, and Clifton. The couple began their life together on the Jennings farm and later moved to Oberlin in 1966.
In Oberlin, Bob worked a variety of jobs, including for the county and a brief time at Rainbow Bread, before finding his passion at the Oberlin Service Center. Initially working under Lyle Pummer, Bob took correspondence courses to deepen his knowledge of repair work and eventually became the business owner. He took great pride in customer service, especially enjoying the variety of rural home repairs, repairing TVs in the shop, and keeping pace with evolving technology and merchandise.
After retiring and selling the store, Bob found joy working at the Oberlin Country Club, where he mowed the greens and played countless rounds of golf-especially cherishing tournament days with his son Clifton.
One of Bob's greatest joys was being a grandfather to McKenzie and Alexis Hartzog. He and Joyce often traveled to Wichita to watch their grandchildren's sporting events. He was deeply proud of them and passed on his love of sports, particularly Chiefs football and KU basketball.
Bob lived a life of service, always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and the Oberlin Covenant Church, which he and Joyce considered their extended family. He frequently returned to Jennings to help with harvest on the family farm and was well known for treating others to his homemade ice cream. Bob was remembered by many, including staff at his care facility, as quietly and secretly ornery-a trait that brought smiles to all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his children: Cheryl Hartzog of Atwood, KS; Kyle Hartzog of Colwich, KS; and Clifton Hartzog and wife Annette of Wichita, KS; grandchildren: McKenzie Hartzog and Alexis (David) Gauntt; great-grandchildren: Callan Gauntt and Emilia Gauntt; brother Floyd Gillespie of Newcastle, TX; sister Dena Marie Way of Springfield, MO; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Hartzog and Dena Kroeze Hartzog Gillespie; his stepfather George Gillespie; siblings Earl Hartzog, Darlene LaRue, and Daryl Hartzog; brother-in-law Martin LaRue; and sisters-in-law Patty Hartzog and Erma Gillespie.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 121 N. Penn Ave., Oberlin, KS. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m., with interment in the Oberlin Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to DSNWK of Northwest Kansas or the Oberlin Covenant Church.
