Colista Pearl LaPrade Lanier was born on February 21, 1941, to the devoted parents Flora Bush LaPrade and Walter Esquire LaPrade. From the very beginning, her life was marked by grace, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
She received her early education in the public schools of Robertson County, attending Highland Institute Elementary School and graduating from Bransford High School in 1958. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Tennessee State University-then known as A & I-where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1964. In 1996, she furthered her dedication to service by earning a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling.
Colista's professional journey was deeply rooted in her love for education and community. She served Tennessee State University with distinction as Director of Development and later as Secretary of Athletics. She was a proud and active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. where she uplifted others through mentorship and leadership.
Her spiritual foundation was strong and enduring. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Sadlersville, TN. Upon moving to Nashville, she became a cherished member of St. Luke C.M.E. Church, serving faithfully under Rev. John L. Glenn, Rev. Ronald M. Powe, Rev. Leon F. Parker III, and Presiding Elder Dr. Ronald M. Powe. She gave her time and heart to the John L. Glenn Choir, the General Missionary Society, and as a Class Leader. Colista was a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her. She was loving, kindhearted, patient, and generous. Her family and TSU students were her joy. Whether someone needed a home-cooked meal, a ride, help typing papers, a place to stay, or simply motherly advice-she was always there. Her love extended beyond bloodlines, embracing play sister Elizabeth Spicely and play brother Willie Armstrong as family.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her beloved husband of fifty-nine years, Jerry Raymond Lanier, and her daughter, Vara Patrese Lanier. She is also remembered by: • Nephews: Steven R. Dartis, Freddie McIntoch, Keith LaPrade, Phillip Reddon, Chris (Xiorki) Reddon, Eric Reddon, Jason Reddon, David (Kim) Brown, Nicholas (Fonda) Brown; Great-nephews: Kenneth (Mira) Davis and Anthony (Dana) Davis. • Nieces: Kimberly J.
