Conrad Hackney, 57, of
Bakersfield, California, passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 2025.
Born and raised in Bakersfield, Conrad came into the world on February 21, 1968, to Susan and Larry Hackney. A true local, he grew up attending Horace Mann Elementary, Chipman Junior High, and graduated from Highland High School in 1986. During those years, he found joy in working out and playing football, always up for a challenge and a good laugh with his teammates.
Conrad had a strong work ethic and hands-on spirit. He began his career in roofing and warehouse work before a good friend, Todd Schreiber, introduced him to the ice cream business-a sweet spot he truly made his own. Together, they worked for years, later teaming up at Scherb's Ice Cream, where Conrad's creative flair came alive. Whether he was whipping up a new flavor or perfecting a classic, he took pride in every scoop.
Music was Conrad's heartbeat. A passionate drummer, he loved jamming in the garage, headphones on, fully immersed in the rhythm. His favorite audience? Friends and family. His joy was contagious-especially when he was surrounded by those he loved, either making music, telling jokes, or playing a round of golf. He cherished time on the golf course with his nephew Zach Bonkosky and longtime friend Todd, playing in tournaments and sharing laughs under the sun.
Conrad had a big heart and an even bigger sense of humor. He loved being surrounded by loved ones-roasting each other, cracking up with his nephew Evan, and nieces Ashley and Madison. "My friends aren't just friends, they're family," he often said. He was someone who made you feel seen, someone who didn't just say goodbye-he always said, "I love you." You never had to wonder where you stood with Conrad-his love was loud, proud, and unconditional.
He is survived by his loving mother, Susan Hackney; his brother Jason Hackney and wife Wendi; his niece Ashley Bonkosky and husband Zach; his nephew J. Evan Hackney and wife Madison; along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him deeply.
Conrad was preceded in death by his father, Larry Lynn Hackney; paternal grandparents Bill and Bonnie Hackney; and maternal grandparents Clayton and MaryAnn Hurlburt.
Conrad lived with heart, humor, and a beat all his own. His spirit will continue to echo in the laughter of family, the rhythm of a drum, and every bite of a well-loved scoop of ice cream.
