Constance T. Semerad, fondly known to family and friends as Connie, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, in Hastings, Michigan. Born on November 26, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, she dedicated her life to education and advocacy for children with learning differences.

Connie's career as an elementary school teacher with Hastings Schools was marked by her unwavering commitment to her students’ success. Connie attended Syracuse University in New York, where she met her husband, Charles J. Semerad, Jr. They embarked on their journey together when they were married on August 9, 1958, in Rochester, New York. She held three Master's Degrees from various institutions, a testament to her lifelong passion for learning and teaching. Connie was also deeply involved in the Hastings Literacy Council and played a significant role in supporting students with dyslexia. Her dedication extended beyond her immediate community as she partnered with others to establish a school in New York specifically designed for children with dyslexia, ensuring that they had the resources and support needed for their education.

Connie's interests were diverse and enriching. She was an active member of the Hastings GFWC and participated in several book clubs, sharing her love of literature with others. A talented Bridge player, she enjoyed the mental challenge and camaraderie that came with the game. Cooking and entertaining in her home brought her immense joy, as did her travels, particularly to the Rocky Mountains. Connie and Chuck were also longtime members of First Presbyterian Church of Hastings.

Connie leaves behind two devoted daughters, Janet (Mark) Englerth and Marcie (Gardiner) Tucker, who will cherish their mother’s legacy of love and learning. She was also the proud grandmother of three granddaughters, Erin, Kaitlyn (Joshua), and Jessica, and a loving great-grandmother to Luci. Her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Semerad, will also remember her fondly.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles J. Semerad, Jr., and her parents, Thomas and Grace (Lyon) Tolman. Connie was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ann Braun, brother-in-law, Gilbert Braun, and brother, James Tolman.

Connie lived a life rich in compassion, intellect, and a sincere commitment to the betterment of those around her.
