Cory Deandre McCullum, affectionately known to many as “Colley Col,” passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, in Auburn, Washington, where he resided. He was 48 years old.
Born on September 10, 1976, in Joliet, Illinois, Cory was a man of intellect, compassion, and quiet strength whose presence deeply impacted all who knew him. A proud graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Cory earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and was honored with induction into the Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society, a testament to his academic excellence and character. He later obtained a Master’s Degree in Management from the University of St. Francis, furthering his commitment to leadership and professional growth.
In 2006, Cory began his distinguished career at Boeing as a Process Engineer/Project Manager. Through dedication, innovation, and strong leadership, he was promoted within five years to Process Engineering Manager in Integrated AeroStructures. He was also a proud graduate of Boeing's esteemed Leadership, Development and Excellence (LDE) program, a two-year initiative designed to shape the company’s future leaders.
Beyond his professional achievements, Cory was an active and engaged member of his community and several organizations. He was a proud member of the Prince Hall Freemasons, Prince Hall Shriners, NAACP, and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
A man of many passions, Cory cherished his music collection, especially his love for vinyl records. His music room was a personal sanctuary where old-school sounds filled the air and fueled his soul. He was also a lifelong, faithful supporter of his beloved Chicago Cubs, Bulls, and Da Bears, proudly waving the flag of his hometown teams no matter the season.
Cory was truly a gentle giant-a man whose presence was matched only by the depth of his kindness. With a quiet strength and a warm, calming spirit, he had a way of making those around him feel seen, safe and supported. Whether offering a helping hand, a listening ear, or a heartfelt laugh, Cory's compassion knew no bounds. He carried himself with humility, always putting others before himself and he was a steady source of love and encouragement for his family, friends and the many young men he mentored. His gentle soul and generous heart left a lasting imprint on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though Cory grew up without a strong father figure, he became one for others. To his son, niece, nephews, and countless others, Cory was more than a relative—he was a protector, a mentor, a father figure, and a constant source of unconditional love. He lived with purpose, always striving to be the man he once needed.
Cory is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Clote and Rose McCullum, and his paternal grandfather James Draper; his aunts Karen Walker, Linda Blackmon, and Marilyn Hays; and his cousins Michael McCullum and Veronica Blackmon and Marissa Draper.
He is survived by his beloved son, Cory Jr.; his devoted mother, Debra McCullum; sister, Tiffany McCullum; brother, Donnis Draper; cherished niece, D’Rionna Adams; his special nephews: Dontea McCullum and Dereon Morgan; and great-nephew Micah Gatewood. Also surviving are his loving grandmother, Addie “Tockie” Draper, goddaughter Joy Taylor, and his lifelong friends and brothers Louis Taylor and Corey Moffett—as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members who were blessed by his life and will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
“No more pain, no more night Cory has walked into Heaven’s light. The burdens he bore are laid down at last, He’s resting with Jesus, the trials are past.
He fought the good fight and he kept the faith, Now he’s standing in Amazing Grace. Though our hearts are heavy and torn, We know he’s gone home to be with the Lord.”
