Obituary of Daniel John Willis

Daniel John Willis,

Daniel John Willis passed away at the age of 52 on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Loyola Medical Center. He was born on November 21, 1972, in Evergreen Park, IL, the son of Thomas Willis and Dorothy Briestansky. Dan was a graduate of Evergreen High School. He dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, touching countless lives throughout his distinguished career in law enforcement.

Daniel's journey in public service began as a cadet with the Palos Hills Police Department. His unwavering dedication soon led him to roles as a Sheriff's Deputy with the Cook County Sheriff's Office and an officer with the Chicago Police Department. In 2005, he joined the Joliet Police Department, where he served with honor in the Patrol Division, Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team, and most recently, the K-9 Unit, working alongside his loyal K9 partner, "Ady". Daniel was also a respected member of the Joliet Police Honor Guard, proudly representing his department and community with dignity.

Those who served beside him admired his bravery, precision, and fierce dedication. Throughout his career, Dan was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. But beyond the accolades, he will be remembered most for his warm heart, sharp wit, and generous spirit-a man who brought smiles even in the most challenging moments.

Dan's commitment to his family was steadfast; he was their biggest supporter. He was the happiest, cheering them on and sharing in their joys. Whether vacationing, boating, or rallying behind his favorite teams -the Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bears -Dan delighted in life's simple pleasures with those he treasured most. He could always be counted on whenever needed; he always took care of those he loved.

At the heart of Dan's life was his deep love for his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Laurie (nee Hansen) Willis; two sons, Cullen and Mason Willis; mother, Dorothy Briestansky; father, Thomas Willis; mother-in-law, Maureen Hansen; brother-in-law, Chris (Angela) Hansen; four nephews, Conor, Quinn, Liam, and Brady Hansen; one niece, Peyton Hansen; his K9 partner, "Ady"; and his brothers and sisters in blue.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John T. Hansen.

Daniel lived courageously and loved deeply. His legacy of integrity, kindness, and commitment will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Visitation for Daniel John Willis will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet, IL, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 7:00 p.m. There will be a police walk-through at 6:00 p.m. As it was his request, cremation rites will be accorded following the services.
