GILBERT, AZ – Craig G. Sumner, 60, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born on November 8, 1961 in Muncie, the son of Byron W. and Sally A. (Wright) Sumner and graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1980. He received his Bachelor's Degree from The University of Arizona and his Master's Degree from Bowie State. On March 26, 2016 in Woodbridge, Virginia, he married Kristi E. Bryan.
Craig served his country honorably in the United States Army for 30 years as a legal administrator in the Judge Advocate General's Corps at several Army installations including three tours in Iraq. He was awarded multiple awards to include the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit and culminated his career as Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) when he retired in October 2016. After retirement, he worked for the Department of Homeland Security (ICE) from 2017 until his passing. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Lodge. Craig was a true patriot who loved wearing the uniform and everything it stands for.
He enjoyed spending his time boating and fishing, was an avid Colts fan and loved listening to music. Craig enjoyed spending his time doing a variety of things but was most happy as long as his family and friends were involved (especially his grandchildren).

Sumner of Gilbert, AZ; one son, Correll and wife Kelsey; daughter, Darrian; four grandchildren, Jaelynn, Bella, Sillver and Aaliyah; two brothers, Gregory J. Incredibly sad news! Chief Sumner was a great American!! I had the pleasure of serving with him at Fort Bragg. He was always helpful and humble, treating everyone with respect. His love for the Army was only overshadowed by his love for his family. May he rest in peace. 'til Valhalla!
