Cynthia "Cindy" Ann Mapes passed away Tuesday, July 16th, 2024, at her home in Stevens Point, surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.
Cindy was born on November 1, 1955, in Wausau, Wisconsin, to the late Jerry and Elaine (Sorenson) Seehafer. She graduated from Wausau East High School in 1973 and went on to complete her Associate Degree in Nursing at North Central Technical Institute. She spent most of her nursing career working for Ministry Healthcare at Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point. She began her career in traditional bedside nursing, and through her own ambition and hard work, transitioned to a healthcare IT role for the remainder of her career where she played a very influential role in large scale projects. In 1978, Cindy married her husband of almost 40 years, Joseph Mapes, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Together they had four daughters, Megan (Brad) Mapes Martins, Krista (Ryan) Trudeau, Jessica Mapes, and Bethany (Casey) Dalsbo.
Cindy had a kind, nurturing spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. In addition to her own family, she always found room in her heart and life to support those around her. She never shied away from an opportunity to help wherever she saw a need, such as heading the Sunday School Program at church, serving on the PTA, or assisting with her kids' Girl Scout Troops. She had a tireless energy to make things special and memorable for those she loved, whether it was sewing handmade Halloween costumes, creating wedding centerpieces, hosting beautiful family celebrations, or designing elaborate Easter Egg hunts. Cindy loved a good Agatha Christie mystery, cultivating her pollinator gardens, and watching the song birds who visited her feeders. She also treasured the community and friendships created through her involvement with The Millionth Circle.
Cindy is survived by Joe Mapes; their four daughters; and by her beloved grandchildren, Solon and Juna Martins, Thomas and Shawn Dalsbo, Elaina Schaefer, and Brynn and Leah Trudeau. Additionally, she is survived by her three brothers, Chris, Paul (Ann), and Terry Seehafer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cindy was preceded in death by her parents.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Aspirus Oncology staff for their exceptional care of Cindy throughout her illness.
An informal Celebration of Life will be held at The Bukolt Park Lodge in Stevens Point at 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The family invites anyone who knew Cindy to come join in remembering, sharing stories and food, and celebrating an amazing life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve, where a memorial bench will be placed this fall in her honor (www.friendsofschmeeckle.org/donate).

I remember Cindy at St Michael´s Hospital for always having a smile. Whatever chaos may have been occurring, Cindy always maintained an attitude of, "we can do this!" I am so sorry to learn of the fight she had with cancer. May she be at peace and without pain. My sympathies to her family and close friends.

A trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon, AZ. with Cindy and Joann holds so many beautiful memories of Cindy. My favorite was walking a path toward the Grand Canyon and turning to talk to Cindy only to find her hugging a tree for dear life!! She did tell us she is afraid of heights!! "I can see everything just fine from the car" she decided. On a trip to Door County with Barb, Jo, and me, Cindy did the driving and kept us all in great food and fun in spite of nothing but rain outside! We had so many happy times. She is always in my heart. Her family was always foremost in her mind; she loves being Mom and Nana.
