D.B. Queen, 99, passed away September 19, 2024, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Affectionately known as "Dee" to his family and friends, he was born in Canton, NC to Forrest M. Queen and Effie Cook Queen. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his seven brothers and four sisters. He has been a resident of Waynesville since 1955.
After graduating from Bethel High School, D.B. enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served during World War II aboard the USS Brush. In 2010, he was privileged to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington, DC to visit the World War II Memorial.
He worked in both manufacturing and sales. After retiring from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, he began a second career farming at his son's berry and vegetable farm in Pisgah Forest, NC. D.B. was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and enjoyed spending time with his family at his deer camp. He passed his knowledge and love for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. In his last years, his favorite activities included trolling around on Lake Junaluska with his grandson, visiting with friends and neighbors on the back porch, watching college sports, and reading. "Dee" was known for his quick wit and keen sense of humor, never met a stranger, and always had an entertaining story to share.
He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Maxine Mease Queen; his daughter, Sharon Loftis; his son, Richard S. Queen (Beth); his grandchildren, Scott Loftis (Laura), Sherry Loftis-Hall (Mike), Drew Queen (Jessica) and Brody Queen (Lyndsey). He is also survived by his six great-grandchildren, Evan Loftis, Eric Loftis, Carter Hall, Izzy Queen, Marley Queen, Zeik Queen and several nieces and nephews.
A Family Graveside service is pending at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1918 Murray Road, Canton, NC 28716.
