Having lived a long and wonderful life, D. John Vaccari, 99, "ever-loving" husband of the late Marion Coffey Vaccari, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2024, with his daughters by his side. Born in Winsted on September 22, 1924, John was the son of the late Adelaide and Severino Vaccari, the fourth of nine children.
Winsted was John's home into his 100th year. He attended St. Anthony School and he began his high school years at The Gilbert School. His high school years were interrupted when he chose to enlist in the Navy. He was proud to serve his country alongside other members of "the greatest generation". John served in the South Pacific on the USS Wasp as an Aviation Radio Man 2-C. In his elder years, John enjoyed sharing with others the pride he felt in having served his country.
Together with his wife Marion, they owned and operated Vaccari's-Young Fashions for over 37 years. During his tenure as a local businessman, John served on the Board of Directors of the Winsted Memorial Hospital and Winsted Savings Bank. He was a volunteer fireman for the Winsted Fire Department, serving as Captain and Deputy Chief for several years.
John was a lifetime parishioner of St. Joseph Church where he served as an usher and lector until his 90th birthday. Additionally, he was a past member of the St. Joseph Church Parish Council, Finance Committee and the Building Committee for the current St. Anthony School building. He also enjoyed being involved in The Winsted Community Chest, The Kiwanis Club, the Chamber of Commerce and was a 4th Degree Knight at the Knights of Columbus Council #22.
He leaves behind to carry on his legacy, his four daughters, Donna (Tom) Cady, Patricia (Dennie) Devanney, Mary Vaccari, and Martha (David) Chamberlain. In addition, he is survived by his brother Leo, sister-in-law Rosemarie, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, John was predeceased by his siblings Virginia Guillet, Richard Vaccari, Robert Vaccari, Ted Vaccari, Mary Bascetta, Martha Shields, and David Vaccari. John's family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Litchfield County, for their care and support.
