Dale Carvell Smith, 81, passed from this life peacefully in his sleep on September 15, 2025 with his wife Judy and sons Alan and Kyle at his side.

Born December 20, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Carvell George Smith and Donna Elizabeth Latham, the second of eight children. Married Judith Ann Nicholson the love of his life on May 6, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. They met when they both worked at Deseret News Press.

He was nicknamed Butch by his Grandpa Latham but it didn't stick. He loved spending time with all his grandparents and working at the Smith family nursery in Bennion. He worked at Hercules Inc for 20 years and then went to work for the LDS church managing the care and maintenance of 20-30 buildings in West Valley and then in Herriman. He served in the U.S. Army and then the Utah Air National guard for a total of 12 years.

He was happy to have "purchased" his grandpa Farres Smith's 1967 Chrysler Newport for $1 and all the Arby's sandwiches grandpa could eat. He'd pick up his grandma and grandpa a couple of times a month for their sandwiches, and then delivered to them after they became home-bound. It took him 10 years to find a replacement fender after he hit a deer in the middle of nowhere Utah north of Moroni. One of his favorite things was to show it off at car shows and hang out with his friends. With help he got to show it last month at the neighborhood car show. He continued the legacy and sold it to Alan for a similar agreement with an upgrade to Astro Burgers, patty melts, and French fries in addition to his regular roast beef from Arbys.

Forever a golfer he played in countless tournaments over the 18 years he worked at Hercules. He continued playing until his back pain was stronger than the desire to swing his driver. He collected monogrammed golf balls from wherever he could get them.

As he slowed he learned to do wood carving and made many ornaments, canes, walking sticks and of course faces carved into golf balls. He loved creating and the opportunity to make something special for his friends and family. There were lots of bearded faces and animals he even carved one with star wars characters. He especially enjoyed hanging out on Thursdays at carving class with all his buddies there.

Dale loved service. He served in many church callings always giving his best. He was a missionary in the Southwest British Mission. He served as Elders quorum president, High Council member, Stake facilities rep, Singles ward bishopric counselor and as Singles ward Bishop. He loved all the young adults in the Sundown ward.

Throughout his life he loved people and could talk your ear off for hours if you let him. He was a tease and always had a quick jibe or phrase for every situation.

Dale is survived by his Wife Judy, his children Alan (Susan) Smith, Shawn Smith, Traci Smith, Kyle (Melissa) Smith, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, with two more greats on the way. Siblings Mark (Jean) Smith, Wayne (Nancy) Smith, Kelly (Heidi) Smith, Becky (Bryan) McCarty, and a multitude of nieces, nephews and amazing family members. Preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lynn, Ted, and Eldon, grandchildren Bryse, and Michaela, and his favorite son in law Mark Olson.

A viewing will be held Friday Sept. 19th, 2025 6-8 pm, Funeral service Saturday Sept 20, 2025 from 9:00-10:00am. There will not be a viewing on Saturday morning.

Much love and many thanks to the staff at Copper Creek Senior Living and Canyons Hospice for their gentle and loving care for Dad. He loved giving them all a bad time and his eyes lit up every time he got to have a chat or poke at them.
