Just learning of Dale's passing now. My friends Rich and Jim have been guests at Wheaton's Lodge over the years, decades in fact. Dale was one of a kind. The jokes and practical jokes, the stories, the advice, the passion for the fishery and the environment, and his genuine friendship will all be missed. He proudly hung my photoshopped photo of him with Barack Obama in his office, pulling the leg of many. Thanks for the memories. Heartfelt condolences to Jana and family.

RIP, Dale....I've been to Wheaton's on just two trips, but on my last I was lucky enough to get 2 days with you. I had two great days of bass buggin' on the gorgeous Spednic Lake, thanks to the fact that you knew every rock.
But most of all, I was treated to two rousing renditions of Robert Service's epic-length poems "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew." Who does that? Maybe not anyone in all of North America.
I've had a lot of guides from Labrador to Alaska and New Zealand and I can honestly say yo.u were the most memorable

Just learned of Dale´s passing. I first met Dale as a teenager back in the late 1960s at the landing area next to the Forest City Dam. I must admit at first Dale seemed a little resentful of our boat´s intrusion into his kingdom, but seeing the girls on board in their bikinis, he quickly assumed his role as official tongue in cheek dam guide showing us all the cool stuff we could do back then. Throughout the next 50 years our paths crossed from the University of Maine to the WWLT and occasional dinners at Wheaton´s Lodge. I very much enjoyed his friendship, wry sense of humor and love of the Chiputneticook Lakes.

A pleasure to fish with, always entertaining no matter how many trips. Very impressive to hear him retell dangerous Dan McGee and Casey at the Bat from memory. I´m sure he made Woody proud with his dedication to carrying out the traditions of Maine guiding! Truly one of a kind. So long buddy and thanks for all the memories!

Very sorry to hear of Dale´s passing. He was a good man. A fun guy to be around. Witty. Deep love of Maine. I fished with him only once but would see him and joke with him briefly in the mornings as the guides met their clients for a day of fishing at Wheaton´s. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.
My best to Jana and his family.

This was I think 1975 or 76 when I had my first interaction with Dale. I got stuck in the middle seat anytime my dad wanted to fish - so for just shy of 50 years i got bounced around with Dale laughing but teaching me so much about the lakes, guiding, outdoors, everything

Rush hour at the end of Castle Road was at 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. I often ran into Dale and other guides at the "put in". "How´s the branch manager" he said as I was swatting black flies with a sapling branch, always offered a friendly voice and a humorous comment. For Christmas in 2020 I received a guided fishing tour which became an amazing day with Dale, my daughter and her fiancé the following summer. "Put it right over there," Dale pointed to a rock out-crop in the water. Bam, hit after hit as we caught a ton of bass, a few perch, had a lot of laughs and a cigar on the return trip. RIP Dale, you made many lasting impressions. Our condolences to Jana and the extended Wheaton family.

Dale and I were in the same class and best friends at Lee Academy. I remember one weekend when we were freshman at Orono, four of us on a whim drove to Montreal for Expo 67, which was the Worlds Fair. To avoid the long lines at the different country´s exhibits, we went around back and snuck in the exits until we get caught at the Russian exhibit and we escorted out.
We were both brothers at ATO fraternity and some of the stunts we pulled I cannot mention here.
A true friend´s friend - we had a lot of fun In our youth and I cherish those memories.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

I'm glad I got to know Dale as well as I did, but wish I had spent more time with him.
He employed me during a difficult time in my life, he and Jana welcomed me to Wheatons.
I remember sitting around breakfast table in Wheaton's one time talking about conserving the woods and conflicting interests. I said the tree huggers and the hunters need to come together, that they have a common goal, to protect forests. Some of the guides looked at me like I had two heads, but he looked at me and said "exactly"!
He was a good man, and inspired others to be also.
A Man that would help you pull your boat out of a burning barn, which he actually did.

The community Dale and Jana created was very important to my family and I will forever be thankful for having the chance to get to know an amazing man. Dale I hope you are giving my Dad a tough time right about now for me.

I knew Dale from two trips to E. Grand. He guided a friend and me on the lakes. It was spring and the fishing was slow so I decided to test his knowledge of Maine cuss words. I stated that I had traveled a lot and having cussed once or twice I listened to others using their version. One of the words was Son-of-a-wh_ _ e. The other cuss word is a bit rough so I will not mention it here. I stated that I had heard those two words exclusively in Maine. He looked at me and responded (in his DownEast voice, "Well Bob, I think those words are taught in 8th Grade English."

I met Dale in 1982 during my first trip to Wheatons w my Dad when I was 12 years old. He made a lasting impact on my life, along with my family. His stewardship of the outdoors and protecting land, water and fish/wildlife is unmatched. He will be missed by many.

We always looked forward to fishing with Dale during our times at Wheaton's. He was quick with a quip or joke, he understood what we enjoyed and wanted to learn while on the water, and we had many far-ranging discussions on pretty much any topic we could think of. We enjoyed hearing about his work with the Land Trust and his other interests. It was a treat seeing his dad's canoe in the museum at Grand Lake and hearing how Dale would "borrow" equipment from it as needed. We particularly enjoyed being part of a evening's poetry reading during one of our visits. I remember him appearing outside the dining room window in the morning, standing in the shrubs, to plan the day's excursion with us and hurry us along! We treasured him both as a guide and a friend. We will miss him. Our condolences to Jana and Art and all of Dale's family. He was truly one of a kind.

menories of Dale are great conversations on many subjects and last month's visit was the last talk we had. I think we both realized that. Dale so wanted to finish his lastest book and I hope he did. His knowledge on the Grand Laker and his over the years' interviews with the builders will be a very interesting read. RIP in peace, Dale. Sophie

Dale taught me how to fish almost 50 years ago. He stopped the canoe not far from the landing to get organized for the day and threw a line over the side for me explaining what to do if there was a hit. We just happened to be over a school of 3 1/2-4 pounders, although of course Dale said he knew it all along. I thought, well this is easy. Lots of good times and good memories for three generations of the Hill family. Condolences to all the Wheaton family from me and Ned.

I knew Dale for 49 years. I have so many fond memories of him...tossing me off a dock, teaching me to drive the laker, truck and trailer (all before i was 12)...breaking a rod and having to tell him...being the camp chore boy, staying on the island in the Arm...learning to fish, cook, guide...enjoy life...I will miss him...and I will enjoy sitting in a laker with him when we meet again

Dale using my little fiberglass fly rod catching bass. He did this with his mask on with a cigar poking through. Covid times. Great with a joke or a story

Dale Wheaton was one of those special people whose eyes twinkled as he told a fish tale or prepared lunch at the camp site! His exuberance for life and fishing made everyone around him smile and laugh. He is, hopefully, fishing in the Canoe with Woodie and my late husband Burt in the " land of the 6 pounders"! Tight lines dear friend! My heartfelt condolences to Jana, Jill, Kim, and the entire Wheaton family! Love Sarina Gwirtzman
