Dallas Henkle Obituary

Dallas Marion Henkle

September 11, 1932 - July 3, 2025

Merced, California - Dallas Marion Henkle was born in Leroy, KS, on September 11, 1932, to parents John Wesley Henkle and Minerva (Huffman) Henkle. He spent his early childhood on the family farm, where he learned the value of hard work by milking cows, driving tractors, and trucks.

In 1950, Dallas graduated from high school in La Harpe, KS. Following his graduation, he joined the United States Air Force in May 1952. Dallas quickly demonstrated his skill and dedication, graduating as a distinguished graduate from Air Force Pilot Training in April 1954. His early career in the Air Force saw him serving in a jet fighter unit, with his first assignment in Austin, TX.

Dallas's passion for flying led him to an illustrious career as a jet bomber pilot, where he flew B-47s and B-52s for nearly 20 years. Over his 23 years of service, he retired with the distinguished rank of Air Force Colonel.

Among his many accomplishments, Castle Air Force Base held a special place in his heart as his favorite assignment. He held various positions, from instructor pilot teaching new students to fly B-52s, to serving as a flight examiner, Chief of the Flight Examining Division, Director of Training, and Associate Deputy Commander of Operations.

His service took him on temporary duty assignments across the globe, including England, Spain, Morocco, and Guam.

A true aviation enthusiast, Dallas owned two personal aircraft: a Phifer J5 and a Cessna 170. His dedication to continuous learning saw him graduate from Merced College and attend Dayton University. He also graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

After retiring from the military, Dallas continued to serve his community by dedicating 32 years to the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was also an active member of St. Luke's Anglican Church, where he served on the Vestry as Stewardship Chairman and Senior Warden. His love for aviation continued as he became a member of the Castle Air Museum, the Military Officers Association of America, and both the local and national American Air Museum in Britain.

Dallas's post-military career included owning and managing real estate properties. He also had a passion for auto racing, being a NASCAR member for many years. He owned several race cars, built engines, and won the championship at Madera Speedway in 1995.

In 1954, Dallas met the love of his life, Clifford Henkle, in Phoenix, AZ. They were married on December 22, 1954, and enjoyed 54 years of marriage before her passing.

Together, they raised four children, Curtis Joel, Michael Dallas, Gregory Allen, and Patrice Louise.

Dallas is preceded in death by his mother, Minerva Sickler; brothers, Doug and Randall; and sister, Wanda Lee. He leaves behind a loving family, including eight grandchildren (plus three spouses); and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dallas Marion Henkle's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A viewing will be held at 9:00am on Saturday August 2, 2025 at Christ our Redeemer Anglican Church, St Joseph's chapel, 2740 m Street, Merced, California, with service at 10:00am with burial to follow at the Merced District Cemetery.

Dallas and Cliffie were our first and the best ever landlords when we first moved to Merced. We became good friends and were always invited to their anniversary dinner each year. God Bless you Dallas, Fly with the Angels!

Dallas was one of my favorite people at the Castle Air Museum. He seen the bright side of things, never looking for flaws. I learned so much from Dallas about flying and some great jokes. He found time to give tours to school groups in a moments notice. To the family, I feel your pain and sorrow. Dallas got all He could squeeze out of his life. I will forever admire him.

He was such a special man! I had the privilege of cutting Dallas's hair for close to 25 years. I've been missing my friend for a bit now. I'm so sad to hear that he has passed. I'll always treasure our long discussions about his military service, airplane restoration and his beloved wife and family.
