Dan Ryan Obituary

Published by White Funeral Home - Lakeville from Jan. 4 to Jan. 5, 2009.
Ryan, Dan P. 48, of Farmington, died Friday, January 2, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. Dan lost his three year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), but most assuredly won the war of life. Dan was born December 19, 1960. Blessed with an unmatched work ethic and uncanny mechanical skills, Dan achieved and excelled in the family-run business of Genz-Ryan Plumbing and Heating and as founder of DPR Motorsports. Dan loved his mechanical trades business and his hobbies: racing, hunting, snowmobiling and of course, Bud Light. Dan loved his family more than anything, without reservations. A 1979 graduate of Rosemount High School, Dan was preceded in death by his friends, John Strese and Roy Ruzicka, and his niece, Chloe Boyum. Dan is survived by wife of 28 years, Lisa (nee Boyum); children, Alison Gilbertson (Troy), Jacob and Dan Jr; parents, Jack and Margie Ryan and Gary and Connie Boyum; brothers, Mike, Tom, Bob, Marc (Dianne) and Jon (Nicolle); grandson, Tanner Gilbertson; brother-in-law, Todd Boyum (Stephanie); and 15 nieces and nephews. Dan is also survived by legions of friends, associates, visitors and helpers that Lisa and the kids want to thank for their boundless love and devotion throughout Dan's illness. Visitation at Elko Speedway, Elko, Minn., Tuesday, 3-8 PM. Funeral 11 AM Wednesday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rosemount, Minn. Burial to follow. Lunch at Rosemount Community Center to follow. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Dan's family has set up a memorial fund which will donate all funds received to "A Race Worth Winning - ALS", a non-profit organization set up by Dan's closest friends and family members, with the sole purpose of supporting families who are dealing with the horrible effects of ALS. Donations made payable to: Dan Ryan Memorial Fund, c/o Vermillion State Bank, PO Box 28, Vermillion, MN 55085. We shall never forget and will always love you. Dear Ryan Family,

Most of you might remember me, as I am the youngest Dashow sister. My family of course was pretty close to yours over the years, with my brother Dave being close friends with Bob and also knowing Kevin and the family very well. I just have to say that I myself have held fond memories from the earlier years, as I remember that I used to dress up in my best pajamas when I knew Bob and any of Dave's pals were coming to our house, because I had major crushes on them, being 6 years younger! Yes, I did, and let me tell you, I remember being very proud! I have seen Bob a few times over the years as well, with my friends playing ball on the same teams and things as well. I also want to send lots of hugs and prayers your way and wanted to let you know that I know Dave saw you guys today which makes me so happy and that our dad sent our family condolences as well. Again, We have you in our thoughts.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the Ryan family. I learned of Dan’s illness while researching some local racing venues to take in my first “live” race. In the past four years I’ve grown increasingly fascinated by NASCAR, and now, regional and local racing venues. I visited the Elko Speedway website and was poking around when I saw a very familiar (unfortunately) collection of letters (ALS). With interest I clicked through to the “A Race Worth Winning” page. My mother was diagnosed with ALS two and a half years ago and we lost her November 13th of this year.

I began following DPR’s result through the Midwest Racing Connection newspaper and was pleased to see that you all had put together a pretty strong team. I meant to get down to the speedway this summer and take in a race, maybe introduce myself, but with two young boys and travels to Iowa to be with my mom, I didn’t make it out. I regret that, and this summer I WILL make it to Elko.

I remember one photograph from this summer with the whole family gathered around and Dan in his wheelchair and I felt a real sense of connection to it because I recognized a family that was bound and determined to “keep on keeping on” in the face of an awful disease. We did our very best to do the same.

I am truly sorry for your loss, but would like you all to know that I found some strength in your family’s endurance and will to keep enjoying one another. I thank you for it.

Here’s hoping I can take in a race at Elko next year and of course I’ll be cheering for DPR Motorsports.

God Bless.

Dearest Lisa and family -
I wish there were words that I could type on this page to ease your pain. Dan was a truly amazing person. What an incredible tribute to him last night. You have a beautiful family to keep Dan's legacy alive. I'll always remember that sly smile & his wonderful, perpetually upbeat personality.
Hopefully you can find some peace in the knowledge that he was loved by so many. He will truly be missed.

You are all in my prayers.

To the Ryan and Boyum family, I was so saddened to hear of Dan's passing. As a friend of Marc's from North Carolina, I feel like I know Dan because of all the wonderful and inspiring things Marc has said about him through the years. Marc is so proud of Dan, as I'm sure all of his family and friends are. God bless you all during this sad time.

Linnea Powers (Carroll)

January 7, 2009

As being an old neighbor, one vivid memory I have of Dan is his getting out of the white and blue Ford (Bronco was it) with a bright red rug rash that spanned from his ankle to far up beyond what his shorts would let the world see. He had no choice...he had to slide into base in order to save the inning! Dan was also not afraid to babysit a child, or several of them at one time. As long as he had duct tape to wrap around the diapers of the little ones, he was happy to oblige. I'm not sure, but didn't he wear Zuba's back in those days? Lisa and family, memories of Dan and your family bring floods of smiles. We are so sorry for your loss.

Lisa and family,

Words alone cannot express my sadness, as I learned of Dan's passing from a family member of mine last night. I will always have fond memories of you and Dan from my high school days there at RHS. What a perfect couple! I will always remember Dan as being such a great guy. The football quarterback and the Homecoming King. I had learned of Dan's illness a few years back. I said prayers for him, hoping for better days for him, and your family. I know Dan is in a better place now, resting peacefully. He is with God, our Lord and Savior.

I will miss you Dan. Until we meet again in Heaven, may God's love keep you and hold you. May the wind always be at your back and may the sun shine upon your face.

Please accept my sincere condolences and may God bless the Ryan and Boyum families in their time of sorrow.

In the 12+ years I worked at Elko Speedway Dan was one person who always signed in with a smile. I will cherish the memories of not only his fine racing but also his jokes, his laugh, his generosity and the many conversations at the bonfires or at his hauler. Lisa, Allison, Jake and Dan Pat, I am thinking of you and praying that God will comfort you in all the days to come.

Don't think of him as gone away-
his journey's just begun
life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.

Just think of hi, as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and je was loved so much.

My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the Ryan Family.

I will never forget my fondest memory of Dan. It was at Elko Speedway in the mid 90's about a year or 2 after he had started racing. They had a fund-raiser for a race fan who had physical challenges, and the track was trying to raise money so he and his father could go to a Cup race and possibly meet his favorite driver. The track had a dunk tank and Dan was one of the first persons in it. I bought a couple of chances and lets just say I wont be trying out for any local teams anytime soon. I told Dan he could not tease me if I didn't hit the target. He agreed. I didn't hit it and being our Dan of course he laughed at me. So I ran up and hit the target anyway, (he made me put in extra money to the pot for doing that, which I agreed to).

I last saw Dan at Elko's banquet and though I wasnt in the Ryan circle of friends, he always had a kind word for me, and when I said hi to him at the banquet his eyes lit up in recognition and said hi back.

Dan I will always appreciate how nicely you treated my brother and I. You always said hi to us. We will miss your smile and your enthusiasm for the sport of racing
